so is a sympton of an overheating fuel pump excessive fuel pumping? my fuel pump is mounted to the wheel well so shouldnt it be grounded because of that location?

electric fuel pump push better then they pull, the pumps we have at work say to mount them as close to the fuel tank as possible plus with it under the rig it should cut down on the noise

Is the stock return hose for a carbed 1.3 big enough for the fuel injection?

The stock return line is usually replaced with a bigger diameter line for EFI applications. That could well be your problem.
