Trail Tough fuel pump noise and fuel problems
« on: June 17, 2008, 06:06:11 PM »
i have a 1.6 8v with a rebuilt head and new everything and i mean everything sensors, water pump, alternator etc. First off i got the high pressure fuel pump from trail tough and that thing is loud, i mean LOUD! anyone else have this problem, if so, any solutions on muffling the noise this thing puts out? Second, is there any way to slow down the fuel injection on this motor? At highway speeds the smell of fuel is very apparent and when i slow down from highway speeds it coughs and belches out a bunch of smoke out the tail pipe. Seems like im getting way too much fuel and its choking out the engine. Anyways im gonna read in the haynes manual tonight, but just wondered if anyone has had this problem. thanks for any input

Maybe the fuel pressure regulator on the throttle body is shot? Have you checked to see what the pressure is out of the pump? And the on the throttle body?

put foam rubber around the pump and two hose clamps, lossen the clamps till the pump looks like it wants to fall out of the clamps, put some wire ties on the lines to keep it in place.

yes on the frame, I'm going to a late model tank with the pump inside for 125.00 from t.t.  allot better I think.

Oh ya , your return line has to be allot bigger than the line coming out of the pump to lower your pressure.

isnt it supposed to be a high pressure fuel pump though? too much pressure=too much fuel maybe? maybe i should look at the in tank set up as well.

both of the pumps are close in psi your reg should handle it, make sure your vac lines are good on the fuel related regs (my 16 valve has an enrichment reg with a hose going to it) not sure on your set up (tbi?) you could just have some dirt stuck in the reg also. or nozzle or injector could be sticking look down the tbi and see if it is dripping or dumping fuel.

Make sure your return line is clear. Those pumps do tend to be noisy - thats one of the reasons why the OEM pumps are mounted in the tank.

i forgot to mention that there is a little dead spot in the throttle when i first step on it, something tells me that maybe my distributor/idle screw combination might be haywire. The motor was timed by a mechanic just after i put it in cuz it was two teeth off, but it still sounds and runs like it might be out of time...

Make sure you have a good ground.  If not the pump can get hot and start cavitating.

other people have mentioned the same thing (ground) for the reason that my temperature gauge is not working. what are the best locations for grounding?

You can ground out to the frame, just make sure you clean off the ground location with a wire brush so there is solid contact with bare frame.  That would have more to do with your fuel pump overheating then your temp gauge not working though.

so is a sympton of an overheating fuel pump excessive fuel pumping? my fuel pump is mounted to the wheel well so shouldnt it be grounded because of that location?

Im having the same problem with the over fueling!! I just did the 1.6 8valve swap with EFI And mine seems to be getting to much fuel also? Im going to try and swap out the fuel rg off another throttle body to see if that helps? Any other ideas? Is the stock return hose for a carbed 1.3 big enough for the fuel injection? Any  help would be great!
