A little lost in my weber install :( .
« on: July 07, 2008, 08:54:47 PM »
Ok, Ive got the weber bolted down.

I got the manual choke version, and finally decided that the stock water lines to the carb should just be connected together. I removed the small (1/4"?) water hose coming from the manifold to the carb, and connected the one that comes from under the manifold to the other port on the manifold. Is this right?

The fuel line fitting on the carb is facing the wrong way and is much bigger than the stock line (probably 3/8" vs 1/4"). Should I just get a 1/4" > 3/8" hose adaptor and connect a short piece of 3/8" hose to the carb?

The only other thing I need to connect is the vacuum line, correct? The vac fitting on the carb is below the choke linkage on the passenger side. What do I connect that to exactly?

Finally, what hose is supposed to connect to the bottom of the charcoal canister? I just noticed that the fitting on the bottom of my canister is simply open.

Ive only had this thing for a bit over two weeks and it is my first carburated automobile so forgive my ignorance when it comes to this stuff, haha.

I'll try to go through your questions and help out best I can. Water choke: just bypass the water choke like you did. Fuel hose: You can get an adapter OR get the 3/8 hose and double clamp it on the mechanical fuel pump side. Make sure and check for leaks once it's running. I'd suggest getting one of those $15 fuel pressure regulators and regulate your pressure to 1.5 lbs. This is also a way to adapt because you'd put the regulator between the output of the fuel pump and the input of the carb. Vacuum: There is a vacuum port on the carb that is for timing advance. You should hook that up to your distributor. Cannister: If you have the 'off-road' version of the carb, the float bowl is vented via a 1/4" npt fitting to your charcoal cannister (on top). If you don't have this version, just plug off that port of the cannister. The bottom of the cannister is supposed to be open.

Good luck, Eric

Thanks for the reply, but I ended up figuring it out myself. I did however do everything pretty much like you said. Recirculated the coolant lines, connected the upper nipple to the charcoal canister, and just got a slightly larger fuel line that would fit on both ends. Other than that I just capped off ever nipple I could find and started it up. It runs great now!

However, I have some more electrical questions now:
1) Is the stock ECM the little metal box located underneath the glove box?

2) If so, what else does the stock ECM control? I took out that little box and noticed no changes anywhere (which is what I was hoping for), but the check engine light still flashes and periodically comes on (which is what I was hoping to get rid of).

What else does the ECM control since it now has none over the fuel system (or does it? fuel pump / regulator?)

The best way to get rid of that check engine light is to remove the bulb. The ECM on the older carburated Samurai is just for carb control. The rest of the vehicle is quite manual.

Ooh ok sweet. So, the box I removed was indeed the ECU? And yeah I guess Ill just have to remove that bulb since there is no real reason for it to be there with the ECU out, heh.
