No, they are not. Different bellhousing, different flywheel.The 1.8 uses a hydraulic clutch, the 1.6 uses a cable. Bellhousings are swappable though.

Could you use a 1.6 transmission even though the gear ratios might be slightly different without dissassembly and replacement of the input shaft?
