I recently purchased an 02 Mitsu Montero Sport and I am thinking of towing the Tracker behind it.  I am looking at a tow bar for the front of the Tracker.  The Montero is rated to tow 5000 lbs.  What kind of issues can I expect towing the Tracker?  Do I put the transfer case in N when I tow it?  Would I be a lot better off to rent a trailer or dolly than to tow it four down?  Thanks.

tracker will flat tow like a dream =) just pop the T case in neutral and start the car every 100miles or so

my tracker has probably a few hundered thousand towed miles on it id guess lol everything works fine

if i were u id look into a brake buddy...when u push harder on the brakes it will make the kick stop also..that way u dont burn up ur brakes it should only cost a few hundred dollars..which is cheap for the peace of mind it will give u..u can pick it up at any camping supply store

u dont need to drop the drive line like i said my tracker has a ton of miles...aswell as the millions of other trackers of various years that are being towed as we speak

the vitara/trackers are like the #1 tow vehicle now

will the sj / sammy tow ok?will it flat tow ok with a lockright??

I know guys who tow them in gear they put them in 5th and put a piece of wood between the seat and the clutch. But i wonder how good that is for the relase bearing and other parts. Even with the tranny in N ur lower shaft still kicks up oil

I tried to flat tow my Track with my girls XJ,  I went about 2 miles and my knuckles were white.  It pushed the Jeep all over and I felt like the Track had more control than I did.



Mine is locked in the back and the Jeep is lifted 2 1/2"s.  I'll dolly mine but flat towing didn't work well for me at all.

see all of the trackers that i have seen towed are being towed by 29-35-45 foot motor homes lol

Yeah that sounds about right.  It must have figured that I wouldn't beat it silly on a trail ride that had all Jeeps and me,  instead it got to drive home 90 miles on 2 1/2 cyls.  Live and learn little Track............ showing up Jeeps will always be top priority.

The reason I bought my Tracer was to tow behind my
motor home. It is an older one with only a 350 Chevy
engine. So you can see I why I wanted something real
light weight to tow.  
Well I just got back from an extended holiday weekend.
I flat towed the Tracker about 1000 miles (first towing trip). I put the Tcase in neutral, trans in 5th. Did not start and run the engine every 200 miles like I've read I need to do.  The trans is not turning, why do I need to lube non turning gears?
The Tcase is spinning throwing oil everywhere in there.
In fact if you think about it you are in 4wd when in neutral!
So don't do this with auto hubs. The first thing I did to my
Tracker was install manual hubs.  I also bought a spare Tcase to tear down and try to find a way to modify the shifter where I can get neutral without going into 4wd first.
Haven't got into that yet. If anyone is interested in this
modification I might be motivated to getting into it sooner.
The Tracker towed great I hardly knew it was back there,
except for uphill into the wind. My camper chuged down
pretty slow. I towed it on Interstate highway, narrow twisty 2 lane mountain roads/passes, and some of the
roughest dirt/gravel roads you have ever seen!
I just need a little more power out of my campers engine.
