need to pass DEQ in Portland, OR
« on: April 25, 2005, 07:24:19 AM »
just picked up a 1986 Sami. i have replaced plugs, oil pan gasket, oil change, filter, air filter, currently running seaform through gas and then changing fuel filter, have new wires. I have sprayed the carb with cleaners, the gas is high thru the window on the carb so i will probably need to adjust float. I was told first time thru emissions that i am not burning all of my gas. running rich? am i missing something or is just a matter letting all the cleaners do their job. this sami was sitting for almost two years. help please as this is my new daily driver. seems to run fine

This part concerns me. There isn't a sight glass on stock 86 Samurai carburators. Try doing a search on carburators here. I know there is a thread or two with pictures of a stock carb.

could try the timing ... sometimes older engines (where compression has dropped) benefit from more advance than "book" value.

It's something you can adjust on the pad, and the tester *might* let you know the difference timing changes it.

Try installing a good catalytic converter.

just get a cheepy cat, you'll prbly remove it later.  You might try mixing in a little "white gas" or Coleman fuel in your tank, I've heard it works but haven't tried it.

Sure! Universals would work, might be able to find a high-flow cat too.

does the cat have to be welded in or can it be done as a slip joint with the U-bolts?

I don't know specific Oregon rules, but in Idaho, I believe that they have to be welded in.

just tried again and got closer to passing. after running seafoam and changing the fuel filter, the plug wires,  a thorough cleaning of the EGR valve and tried to clean the intake side without removing the intake.  i passed HC with a 3.74 and brought my CO down to 114.0 but i need to get to 85.0 or better. If it were running rich would it cause this to happen? thanks

Try putting in a bottle or two of rubbing alcohol, I had a friend who put two of the smaller bottles in on a 1/4 tank and it passed after failing badly the first time.  It worked for Washington emissions.   ;D
