t case stuck in low
« on: December 23, 2005, 09:47:29 PM »
went 4 wheeling today and there was small hill, 4 time to get up but failed, last time up my sammy stalled out and i coasted down to the bottom of the hill.got the sammy restarted and attempted to pull forward and it was like i was in neutral.tried to shift the t case into low but the stick wont move, its like its lock in one position.so i got pulled to a clearing and pulled the front of the t case off (the part with the shifter) and i slipped into gear ,so i put the front back on and got in the sammy and the shifter is still frozen in one place but now im in low 4 . ive never taken the t case apart before.will i find something broken or just out of place ?or is there a trick to getting the shifter loose with out a tear down?

Do a search for 'Shifter Sheet'...it is most likely your problem.

To get it out of gear, pull your shifter off the T-Case from inside the truck, and there will be two rods that the shifter slides into. These two rods should make a 'square' that the shifter sits in. If this square is out of line, it wont shift. Line those two rods up with a screwdriver and it will work. Then, buy a new shifter sheet ($8-16), and install it.

You'll be Good to go.

This is an extremely common problem, and I wrote an extremely vague 'how-to'. Do a search, and there are pictorials on how to fix it. It is easy, takes 5-10mins total.

Do a search for shifter and sheet at Ack's FAQ (the URL is in my Signature, below) for a link to an article describing the fix.

Some of us got a great deal on a Samurai because of this common problem... ;D

Had my sammi do the same thing about 1 week after I got it. Felt really silly when after towing it home, and taking 5 mins to fix something I could have fixed and continued to wheel.  ;D

Not really. Mine was replaced when we put in 4.1 gears, my friends 87 still has the original sheet. And it works flawlessly.
