towing tracker with Toy 4runner
« on: December 31, 2005, 06:26:49 PM »
Hey all, I'm thinking of towing my tracker on all 4s with a tow bar behind my 2001 4runner with a V6.  Have any of you done this before?  I know that the owners manuel suggest that I run trailer breaks above 1,000lbs and the tracker is probably right around 2,200 lbs.  I'm just wondering if it would get a bit squirely behind the 4runner.  Kind of like the tail wagging the dog.  Thanks for the info

Aaron

Yup, just like that.  How did it perform?  Did you have any problems or advice to pass on?  Thanks

sorry i read that wrong i sent a pic of my sami,i have a 96 tracker 4 door , and it has the same bumper on it too. you could feel the tracker more than the sami , i think cause of weight.well pulled both of them on the high way at about 65 mph, the pathfinder did fine, but it did bring the power on it down though, but turning not a problem, and never got squirley

I hope you like getting 12 mpg or worse if you have the 3.4 with out the blower on it. my trd sucked pulling my sammie, other than no power and gas mileage it towed fine.

Never tried towing my track with its tires on the ground, but I have a 6x12ft tilt trailer that I hauled it around with my 91 Toyota ext cab 4x4 with the 3.0 v6 and a 5sp. I avg'd 15 mpg towing between 70-75 mph and never felt squirelly (sp?). It did slow down acceleration a good bit and it really didnt like hills greater than a 45 deg incline, could only maintain 55 in 4th gear on those. Other that that the old toy pulled it quite well.

Just towed a '93 LWB Sidekick home (west Michigan) from Nashville, TN area. Several hundred miles. I towed it with my 2wd Astro  which has a 10" lift and 32s. Hardly even knew it was there. It cost me 1.5 MPG diff during the journey. Felt it a little during hard breaking was all. I suppose my Astro is alot heavier though than a 4Runner. ?  It also has the 4.3 V6 Vortec which is a pretty strong motor for towing. So in other words my post here is of no help. Sorry :-\

Just walked in the door from the trip and read this thread and thought I would reply just in case anyone wanted to tow one with an Astro/Safari van.

OK.  I read the answers and the gripes.  Here is the answer.  I tow my Sami everywhere - it is so low that the highway performances have been eliminated from the repertoir os our Sami.

I use a Ford 250 PowerStroke.  I normally get 19 mpg.  When the Sami is bouncing along behind it goes down to 18mpg.  Ouch that hurts.  Sometimes, going along the highway trough Wyoming it gets - you guessed it - 19.

When you tax an engine that is designed to basically move only the auto it is installed into you can bet there will be a drop in mpg.

The Sami will tow with less sway if you put 38 to 40 pounds of air in the tires.  It won't hurt unless the road is extraordinairly hot.  I have a pump installed on the sami.  On really rough roads whether towing or riding I go down to 12 lbs.  Believe me it is better to hammer the tires than the Sami.

Keep towing.  Keep on loving these little cars

Thanks for the great replies, now I need to go out and buy a tow bar before the end of the month.  I plan on pulling the driveshaft when I tow it, do you just unbolt the rear and tie it up or actually take the whole driveshaft out and cover the output shaft with some tape or a rage?

thanks
Aaron
