More engine power

 I have an 1986 Samuria all stock except for adding K&N air filter, and a bit biger tires. Looking for tips in getting more horse power out of my engine when driving trough mountains. Seems to slow down a lot. Thanks

You're gonna hear it sooner or later, so let me be the first: more air into the engine through the K & N will create a need for a better way to get rid of it. Get a bigger exhaust and let that baby breathe free!!

you know those vegie drinks, i think they are called a V-8 ;D




but seriously....... it is really hard to get a awfull lot of power from a samuri motor. the most common method is a transplant from a trackkick.

I'm trying to resist, trying, no no drawn to the dark side..........

Well it all depends how much you want and how much you want to spend.

Shilly is right first step is make it breath, but locjaw is also right in that if you want a BUNCH more power then the 1.6 swap is really worth looking at as to bang for the buck.

If you are convinced you need to stay with the 1300 but still want more.....

1) Good exhaust (like Shilly said) 2-2.25"
2) Header, I like Calmini's
3) Weber 2 bbl downdraft change over
4) Camshaft change, yes it is a pain but will get good results

After that you are getting into real serious stuff that I can't see being good value.

I forgot to add that I live in California, so I need to stay smog legal. I can start with the exhaust, and I think that I can find smog legal headers.

A V8 will be nice, but I sold my K5 cuz I couldn't afford the gas for it. Maybe one day when gas is back to 1.30 pg. I buy another chevy.

The 1.6 can be done in california

New engine just can't pollute more than the new one...


You may have to take it to a referee to certify it, not sure about that part..but there are a few around here that have done it

Calmimi.com , smog legal header ( i think it is but never tested myself ) , exhaust and rv cam will give you a good  hp boost for the buck. The Weber will make it breath even better but you would have to put the stock carb back on every time you smog. Do you live in the city or mountains. Some Calif counties are smog test exempt after the smog cert for sale or purchase. Check with your counties DMV office. Not telling you to do anything illegal, you understand...but KN, header, bigger exhaust, downdraft Weber and you will think your Sams running on moonshine. One last thought....if your tires are over 215x15 you will notice it going uphill, with a stock 1.3

As long as we are all talking power from our powerless little trucklets, Has anyone tried the 2.0 conversion?    Trail tough has a $3500 buck package that supposedly takes you to 130 hp....

Gearing can help a lot too. Drop in a Crawler t-case and your hi-range will be lowered as well putting the engine back into it's optimal range.

I would love to upgrade to the 2.0 in a year or two.   Im hoping that when i do there will be a power steering conversion kit that will fit the 2.0 in a samurai.

Before anyone trumpets the 1.6 to me, I would love to do that too, but the number of low mileage 1.6 engines out there gets less every year, and im hoping to keep this samurai running forever.  SO im figuring there are several model years of the 2.0 newer than the newest 1.6......or at least im hoping.....:-)
