Difference between 16V ODB1 and ODB2
« on: January 03, 2006, 06:22:23 PM »
Hey guys I have a 95 Tracker 16V that needs a motor. None of the local Junk yards have one for this year but one of them has a motor for a 98. They don't know if it will work or not he said one big difference is it is ODB2 and my 95 is ODB1 ? Can I use the 98 longblock and what all would I have to change out to convert it ? I am assuming they are the same and all that I would have to change would most likely be the Intake and Exhaust manifolds.

the head and block should be the same - just use your intake, distributor, exhaust manifold etc.

I would say the distributor for sure and maybe the injectors? (high z low z stuff?)and just forget about the wire on the front of the oil pan, your o2 sensor could be the same just match up the wires(one two or three ect.)that should be it, I would love to have a 98 engine.

Why would the distributor and injectors be any different?  I don't get that.

not sure about the injectors, but I think that the obdII has a crank sensor instead of using the dist. or hall cell effect inside the dist. you might have to have the matching ecm to use the crank trigger system? just a guess.

My 93 sidekick had a obdII motor put in before I bought it.  I believe it has the old distributor on it, and it seems to work fine, except that to get the timing near factory specs, you have to have it all the way at the end of its travel.  Taking it out and turning it one cog over doesn't help, because then it is at the end of it's travel the other way.

The wiring harness was replaced and matched to the motor, but the ECM is original.  There was just a plug where the crank sensor was in the oil pump, and the wire that went to the sensor is just floating free.  Since the computer doesn't know it's there, it doesn't matter.

Not sure about the injectors.
