POR-15 vs. Chassis Saver
« on: January 04, 2006, 07:35:36 PM »
I have heard a LOT about POR-15 and how wonderful it works for a while now, but I can't find it locally, and everytime I need it, or think about using it on something, I want to do it NOW.. lol.. no patience..

after calling all over Cincinnat today, I found a store (KOI Automotive finishes in Monfort Heights, Cincinnati Ohio)  that carries a product called Chassis Saver. The fellow SWORE to me that it was at least as good as POR-15 if not better..  I figured what the hey..

I bought a couple of the different finishes, the gloss black, and the satin black.. I have a LOT of rust on my Tracky.. and I have a lot of other projects going that could use something like this if it works..  I gave it a shot..

All I can say is wow... WOW...  never having used POR-15, I can't compare, but the specs, and write-ups are impressive, and the application, and initial drying and appearance of some of the items I have used it on are nothing short of spectacular!

The first thing I used it on is a heaby gauge winch mount/platform I have on the front of my trailer.. The whole trailer needs attention, sand blasting and refinishing, but this 5/16 diamond plate steel was unfinished, and rusting well..  no danger of rust through for a 100 years or so, lol... 5/16 is a lot of plate..  but it was well rusted and I thought it would make a perfect first test for the Chassis Saver.  After one good coat it looks like it was powder coated shiny black!  Another nice thing, this product goes a long way, I didn't read the coverage information, but I only poured 3 or 4 ounces of the product in a small tray, it did the whole 2 foot by 2 foot platform with a THICK coat, and still had plenty to slap a BUNCH of areas of body rot on my Tracky (tacky Tracker)  You have to be very careful storing the product after use, they even recommend floating a thin layer of primer what is left in the can.. it is moisture cured. It isn't a paint, more of a high-tech coating...  well... Read up on it here:

http://www.magnetpaints.com/underbody.asp

I would have used POR-15 if I could have found it.. but found this instead, and a LOT of people are saying it is superior to POR-15.. I can't vouch for that... but I will go out and band the pejeezus out of the plate tomorrow, to see if I can chip it.. will report back...

Thought you guys might want to check out an alternative to POR-15,  check out the different uses for the aluminum silver.. seems it builds very well....

Lemme know if anyone here has any experience with this product, and I will get back to you on the durability of my projects.

I've used POR15 before with somewhat satisfactory results.  In the end it always faded and shrank a bit, just like it's detractors say.  This leads to peeling at the edges.

I was considering that Chassis Saver but ran across a product by Eastwood called Rust Encapsulator.  I got some on Ebay and haven't used it yet.  It's gotten good reviews from car restorer sources and all have mentioned it's superiority to POR15.  I'm hoping it will work as well as promised.
I will say if POR15 gets a good bond and truly latches onto the surface it's on you can't get it off.  I had a peice of aluminum that I used as a stir stick that was coated in the stuff.  You could bang on it with a 3-lb sledge and not scratch the POR15.  I'm hoping the Rust Encapsulator works as well and is easier to apply, as promised.

Keep us updated on the Chassis Saver.  If I ever buy something in quantities higher than a quart I think I'd go that route.

It's a bit cold to be painting but I'm hoping to use it this spring on the Ranger and Tracker.

LOL....  sorry...  that didn't come out quite right I guess.....

 ::) ::) ::) ::)

I meant it was fully cured, and I went out and chipped at it, and scratched and was just pleased as all hell... By the time I can offer a real long term rust reappearance opinion....I will never be able to find this thread.... lol...

Besides, if I keep ANY vehicle for over 4 months, it's like a real happening... SO... long term don't mean much....

They say the aluminum makes an excellent primer, but even the gloss black makes a good primer too... I find that hard to believe, with the gloss it has. but I am going to be putting that to the test too....

I had a gladware bowl I was using, kinda like thin tupperware...  when it dried, it peeled right off that in a single sheet, and seemed to have very high film strength...

anyway, interesting stuff...  hope it holds out as promised, cause my tracky has some severe rust problems.. I think I have caught them in time to make it a great trail rig... .... time will tell..
