94 5-Speed Transmission Noises
« on: January 05, 2006, 01:47:13 AM »
This started right after I replaced a bad rear Ujoint or maybe the bad ujoint caused the problem not sure. My transmission has bad gear noise when putting power to it in 1st-2nd-3rd and 5th but not 4th. If I let off the gas in any of these gears the transmission quiets down but just barly touch the throttle and the noises are back. I am sure it is a bearing but why not in 4th at any rpm or speed. I never have had a service manual for this truck but not sure if it has a clear view of the transmission to see how the rails and sliders are to figure out why no noise in 4th.

The furthest back bearing on the lower shaft is bad. Thats almost always the first to go. I have 2 on the bench at work with this problem. Its not that hard to install and only cost about 28 bucks. If your capable of replacing a transmision then I would say your probabally capable of replacing that bearing.

Easy enough except why would 4th not cause that bearing to make noise. is it not using the lower shaft when 1-1 ratio of 4th gear?
Thanks

Speedy,
I'm a long way from a transmission expert, but I saw mine taken apart last year for the same thing. I believe it's called the pilot bearing, and the reason you don't get the noise is because it's the straight drive (1:1) right through the gearbox.  It looks dead easy to fix, to the point I'd consider it myself if it ever goes bad again.  On mine, the entire shaft was screwed because the bearing had grenaded to the point of destruction; we couldn't even find the pieces. Do it sooner than later, cause parts for these little babies are $$$ to get.

Yes 4th is straight through and does not spin the lower shaft.  I drive home from Florida when this happened to me once. I just drove in 4th as much as possible using 1st-2nd and 3rd only to get up to speed.

Any suggestions on a repair manual break down of a transmission so I can remove and repair. I need torque setting and clearance measurements I am sure to repair. Did Suzuki or GM release dealer service manuals for these trucks? Thanks
