another tracker/sidekick
« on: January 08, 2006, 06:08:52 PM »
well ive only been on the fourum for a few days now. after seeing all the cool ass 4x4s, i gotta go get me one. im going to go look at a 95 suzuki 4x4 4dr.. which i think is cool cuz it dont have any airbags to worry about.  it looks to be in pretty good shape only thing i could see wrong with it is the grill has a little piece broken off and  it has a few dents on the hood. other than that it looks good. im not sure on the price yet but im going tomorrow to check it out when i get off of work. i have a question though, has anyone used a tracker to tow another tracker on a trailer. i know the stock motor would probably have trouble but with a 4.3 or i saw a company that makes adapters to put vw diesel motors in it. thanks for any input.

there is a guy on zuwharrie(maybe even on here), that runs a vw diesel and he loves it.  Do a search on here for vw diesel and that should keep you busy for a while. BTW great choice if thats how you go(diesel).

The Trackers only have a 1000 lb tow rating, and it has little to do with the pulling power of the engine.  The problem is that the truck is so light, and has such a short wheelbase, that a heavy load will push the truck hard enough to make it swap ends on you.  A heavy load will actually try to pass you on a downhill, and pull the back end around sideways.

I pull a lightweight camper with my Tracker, and I can feel that we are pretty close to the limit.  A 4dr may be a bit more stable, but the added wheelbase is probably not enough to make towing a trailer with another Tracker safe.

Someone else on this forum has towed a Tracker with a Tracker on a tow dolly, with no problem, and I am sure he will chime in with his experience.

But, a trailer is a bit different situation with the balance of the rig.  I was in a Jeep a few years back, towing a trailer with another jeep body (no frame or drive line) in it, and we almost lost it on a downhill.  All the driver could do was punch it and hope we could keep ahead of the trailer.

A tow bar rig may be safer for you.

That seems to be depend on local legislation. In the UK the tow rating is much higher, I can't remember the numbers offhand. I do find that with a big load the brakes seem a little weak. The 5 door is probably much better tow vehicle, better brakes and more stability but I don't think towing another Track/Kick on a trailer would be a good idea.

it all revolves around the trailer having brakes. If you have electric traile rbrakes then you can use them to stop any sway. I pull a 2000 lb boat with my 4 door and have no problems other than power!  ;D
