« on: January 09, 2006, 12:16:53 AM »
the first is

1) what are elliptical leaf springs i hear 1/4, 1/2 ????

the second

2) if i were to double line a 2000lbs winch  too get macximum pull do you think it would have been worth the $77.00 I could of got the winch for???

I am thinking for the places I would be going the winch and say a 50 ft tug strap would get me out of most stuff and even if I did ruin it after awhile it was only 77 bucks. i do not rock crawl and it would only be too get me out of up hill stuff or the really hard part is getting me out of mud ...

When you're stuck 10 miles down a muddy road and all alone and it's getting dark , you'd pay the $77.... and get off cheap, don't ya know...

One warning:

My 6000 pound Warn Winch would have no trouble lifting my 3000 pound Kick straight up a cliff.  But it might not be enough to pull it out of the mud, if it's stuck up to the belly.

Mud is the worst possible thing to get stuck in!

Just my $0.02 worth...

That is 1/4 Elliptical.  Notice there is only half an Leaf Spring.  Used with some type of "link" suspension,  all it is there for is to support weight, not side to side or "wrapping" motion.

3/4 Elliptical.  Notice there is a full spring and half a top spring.  In that configuration the top half leaf is there for drooping purposes.  You can also set the top leaf to hold weight for added up travel.

And 1/2 Elliptical is your run of the mill leaf spring suspension.

Elliptical is a shape like an egg or oval.  So a standard leaf spring is half the shape of an oval so that is 1/2 elliptical.  Half of a leaf is 1/4 the shape of an oval so hence the 1/4 elliptical.  And 3/4, you get it.

There is many many many types and ways you can configure a elliptical suspension.  But we'll get into that another time.
