I bought an 89 tracker 4x4 real cheap. its only got 110,00kms on it and runs great. i think its a good vehicle to toss a lift and tires on. i was thinking of buying a set of those 1 1/2' spacers that "Digger" sells. And also get the crown victoria shocks for the rear. and i was wondering what i can fit for tires on it? i figure about 235's. How much different will it be to drive with these extras? will i notice some gains threw mud?

I have an 89 as well, and am about to put on digger's spacers, crown vic shocks and some ome struts. I run 235s on the factory rims without rubbing.  however they are just medium aggressive A/Ts from walmart, not sure if a set of mudders will rub in that size.  you could probably even run 30s with the lift.

 I just finished helping da_tub, he's got a set of diggers spacers, it's a 4 dr with 235 A/t's and didn't rub before the lift.

 Now with some minor fender trimming or maybe a 2" body lift he could fit 31's no problem, we fit up one of my 31's and they'll fit but might rub if you flexed the suspenion at full turn

P.S. Diggers spacer instructions should say "for ages 3 and up" even I found them easy to follow (didn't scratch my head once)

   Is it a 5 speed?  If its an auto, I would think it'll be worse in the mud with bigger tires (other than the improvement in tread), because it'll be harder for the motor to turn them, especially fast enough to clean them out.

I've read the opposite, Auto's are easier for running larger tires than the 5 speeds, I've even read some guys will swap Auto gears into their 5 Speeds.  Didn't some 89's have 5.38's?

Right now I've been cranking out 1" sets and selling them on ebay, much faster turnaround and faster sales that way. If I get enough enough demand though, I'll start making 1-1/2" sets again. Generally it's the opposite.  With a stick you can always downshift to a lower gear and then just stomp on it, bouncing off the rev limiter, for goop slinging wheel speed.  An auto might not find the right gear, try to downshift in the middle of the bog, or what not.  Unless you adjust them to correct for it they're already shifting a bit odd due to the bigger tires.

Seems like most people get a non-OD auto with 4.something gears, put on bigger tires, then get 5.12's from a 5 speed and swap them in.  Can't say as I've heard of anyone doing the reverse...aside from a guy who had swapped in a diesel and needed higher gears to keep the revs down with his little tires.

yea, mines a 5 speed. With 235's or so is it gonna rev a bit lower going down the highway?
