Airbag fuses
« on: January 27, 2006, 07:01:06 AM »
Does anyone know if the driver and passenger airbags have separate fuses on the 99+ models or even on the older models?  I am again considering a newer Tracker and wonder if I can disable the passenger airbag by pulling a fuse but still keep the driver one engaged.  That way I could have my son in the front seat.

There is only 1 fuse, but there are 2 seperate connectors that you can disconnect.  I still wouldn't want my son up front unless I'm offroad,  In which case I'm fine having them both disconnected.  Here is how the FSM says to disable the air bags when working on the vehicle.

Quote
DISABLING AIR BAG SYSTEM
1) Turn steering wheel so that vehicle’s wheels (front tires) and
pointing straight ahead.
2) Turn ignition switch to “LOCK position and remove key.
3) Remove “AIR BAG fuse from “AIR BAG fuse box.
4) Disconnect Yellow connector of contact coil and combination
switch assembly.
i) Release locking of lock lever.
ii) After unlocked, disconnect to connector.
5) Pull out glove box while pushing its stopper from both right and
left sides and disconnect Yellow connector of passenger air bag
(inflator) module.
i) Release locking of lock lever.
ii) After unlocked, disconnect to connector.

always disconect the battery before doing this kind of stuff and wait about 20 min to 1 hour, just to be sure there is no power left,, remember air bag systems have a capasitor in them ,,don't want any accidental inflations....

I have heard that before, and was kind of suprised that the steps for disabling the air bag system did not include that.  Then I looked around a little at where the FSM refers to those procedures, and it always says to disconnect the battery before disabling the air bag.  Kind of strange they didn't write it once in the air bag procedures instead of mentioning it every time.
