Hey everyone, I made a dumb mistake and I need some help from some more experienced samurai owners.

I have the old samurai sloppy shifter problem, so i decided to replace the pin.  The problem is that I neglected to put the tranny in neutral before pulling out the shifter.  The tranny is in reverse and the stick shift doesn't really feel like going back in (or atleast doesn't feel like shifting out of reverse once it is in).

I'm new to sammis and don't know much about how the transmission is set up.  Is there a simple way for me to put it back into neutral using something like a screwdriver or something?  Or doesn anyone have a nice schematic of the samurai transmission so i know how it works (and thus, how to fix it).

I feel like a retard, but i hope someone can help

There are a number of sites that have the "88 FSM available online as a PDF file. One can be found at the site link in my signature, below.  Chapter 13 (located in the second PDF file) is describes transmission assembly/disassembly.

I think the simplest solution is to to try to insert the shifter so that it seats in the Reverse position then try shifting it out of reverse.

Alternatively, you can try to reset the three shifter rods to neutral with a screwdriver, then reinsert the shifter.

I would try for the "insert the shifter" approach as the positioning appears to involve sliding two rods and rotating another.

Unfortunately, I am on a dial-up connection until Tuesday so I cannot easily upload picture 13-23 which shows the the shifting rod assembly.

try putting the shifter as far in as it well go and shift gears try to get it in neutral or till it falls in place

Thanks for the service manual.  My Haynes manual just had a statement that the internal components of the transmission are complicated and not for a home mechanic.  I needed a few pics to know how it works, in order to know how to fix it.

Pretty simple to just use a screwdriver to get it back into neutral.  All fixed.
