Sammy transfer case
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:19:57 AM »
...in a tracker. Who's done it?

With the 4.3 swap looking better and better, I am gonna have to come up with a way to connect the 4L60 tranny to my transfer case. My dad gave me the go ahead to use his sammy transfer case since he is doing a complete 2.8/tranny/transfer case swap in his sammy. Driveshafts shouldn't be a prob to fab... but depending on the crossmember alterations and samurai t/c hang down factor, it might not be worth my time. I do have a 700R transfer case out of a blazer... but it would require me to swap tailshafts in my Astro 4L60... I don't wanna do that, nor do I wanna use a 700R (throttle valve factor). I have the complete harness for the 4.3 & 4L60... so I would like to keep them together if I can.

I'm gonna try to do this for less than $450 (the cost of a 1.6). So far I don't see a problem.

Has anyone seen a sammy case in a tracker? Any links? Any problems to address?

Yep I have seen it done and if it is done right it will not hang below the frame rails, also I'm currently working on doing it to mine but in a different way than what I have seen done all ready. If it works out ok with mine I will be making the plates and selling them. so I will not go into it too much right now.

I have seen it done as well but remember, a sammi t-case has a passenger side uotput, not a centered output like your kick t-case.

Yeah, I read thru some of chiefs old posts and found that. He says it doesn't seem to cause too much of a problem, so I hope to work around it.

The tranny tunnel clearance might be a problem without a body lift... but I hope to get around that with a little massaging. I just need to get the 1.6 pulled so I can check the dimensions...

You really don't have that much of a clearance issue with this if you do it the way chief has his or  if you have the auto tranny and just do away with the kick transfer case completely and mount in a sammy case, now what I'm doing with my rear diff is I'm building it so it is off set just like the sammi diff, I was looking at buying a hydberd rear diff but with the money they want for it I can built if for all most nothing and used the money saved from building my own for the lockers that I want.  my track/kick build up has allready started with the collecting of the parts that I will need for the build up and the machining of the custom plates and adaptors that I will need so far I have machined all of the alignment bushing and built the jig  that I need to build the rear diff, the adaptor plate for the auto tranny to do away with the stock t-case and I have been working on auto cad with the lay out of the front suspension, wich is going to be SAS with coils rather than using the leaf springs.

I don't think the rearend offset will be much of an issue for me. I can deal with a bit of vibration...

What version of CAD are you using? I am an Architectural Designer by day, so I work with CAD all the time. I plan on doing my custom 4.3 engine mounts and 4L60 tranny mounts in CAD too... it'll give me a better visual.

I moved my tracker over to the garage this weekend and started inspecting the clearances. It looks like it'll be tight for a 4.3 & 4L60, but with a bit of massaging I might be able to get it in there. I'll get a better measurement for it all later. I still need to note my tranny centerline so I can get as close as I can with my new setup.

I went with the 4.3 swap cause I figured I could do it cheaper than buying a 1.6... and so far it still looks possible. Thanks for the info... let me know how your install goes.

I'm using auto cad 2000 at work  and I have been getting into a little bit trouble for spending too much time on my own projects and not works.  as for the 4.3 swap you are write it is cheaper to do it than to find a good running 1.6 I know of people who have given 500.00 for a 1.6 around my place and I make them sick when I tell them all I did to get my tracker was to swap a $75.00 explorer axle for it.  I got most of my items rounded up for my build up I just got to finish up a couple of other projects first and than I can start the build up of my new rig

Can we so those CAD drawings from the front suspension?
I'm planning about making a simmelar thing but i didn't had the time to do it yet.

(If you could use them, I've a few drawings to visualize how i've shorten my t-case axle from the tracker tcase to match a sammy case. I'm working with AutoCAD 2005 but probably i can save them in an older version also.)
