You need a hot iron from a tire shop
or you could use a cut off wheel very carefully
and it will take you a very long time

I recommend getting extra blades, in different sizes.

To be honest, if you have the patience, I have seen a good cutting job done with a utility knife.. some tires are softer and easier than others.. I could actually do mine with a pocket knife if I REALLY had the patience... (I don't!!)

That hot knife up there would pay for itself in an afternoon at the trails I go to.. You can cut'em pretty quick with practice.

Hot knife is the only way to go for a nice professional job.. and on harder tires, it's a necessity

I used to cut my own tires all the time when I was racing sportbikes.  We had to use DOT tires for the class I was racing.  I would cut more grooves in them for the rain races and it was night and day better than the stock version.  Cheating?  maybe.... ::)  The tires started as DOT's but there wasn't anything in the rule book against cutting my own treads. ;D

Cutting more treads is extremely easy and you can make some awesome looking tires.  Show up at a ride with some cut tires of your own and all of the guys will be asking where you got them.
