I think the problem is the timing advance. Is there a way to lock it out & just set it at 35 degs?

Does anyone know which wire on the distributor or VSS controls the advance?

There isn't a single wire that controls the advance. Its calculated by the ECU based on information on RPM, manifold pressure (unless you have a seperate vacuum advance), water temperature and air temperature. On OBDI models you can put a jumper across the diagnostic terminal to fix the ignition timing.

I was looking the FSM. A fault with the idle switch does not set the Check Engine Light, you have to pull the codes. I also know that on some Mitsubishi ECUs the same applies to the VSS, however the FSM indicates that this is not the case on a Zuk.

That's the info I needed - thx...Can you tell me which wire it is? I have a '95 16 valve "California" model Geo Tracker, vin code 6.

FYI - I figured out the engine surge problem. Their was a vac leak at the EGR valve. I replaced the gasket & torqued it down, no more surge.
