Drive train differences on 96-98 Cami vs Japan Sidekicks
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:32:20 PM »
So does anyone know what the drive train differences are between the Canadian and Japanese Sidekicks built from 96-98?  I know from 96-98 is when the CV's were 26 spline, but from the parts catalogs it seems like the CVs are different depending on if it is Japanese are Canadian built.

Are they really?
Are they interchangeable?
Would some simple machining make them interchangeable?

And if you happen to know any other useful information... this is in the context of swapping them into a GV so you can install lockers ;)

This is a good question, or set of questions that is. In the one or two swaps we've done to use the late model Sidekick half shafts, we didn't specify Canadian or Japanese. Actually, I'm not sure USA market got late model Japanese built Sidekicks.  So, either we were really lucky and only got the shafts that work OR they are interchangeable.

I know that is pretty sketchy info but no one else chimed in! :)

I think the problem may be that the Sidekick half-shafts are shorter than the GV half-shafts so even though they would fit into the center section they'd be too short. Right?

Anyone else have any info?

Some T-cases have different output splines on the
drive shafts, but I don't know the indications of which
come with which, it seems to be a random things, but
that dosen't make sence.

Right.  I just double checked the instructions for the GV axle swap.  For the drivers side you only use the inner shaft.  On the passenger side you make a hybrid shaft using the GV midshaft and out CV mated to the inner stub and cup from the kick.  So on both sides you are using the longer GV outer axles and just swapping the parts that fit into the center section.
