snorkel ?
« on: February 26, 2005, 11:01:20 PM »
I have been working on making my rigg go places it should not. I managed to get a 16v under the mud and water (not that hard really) filled the air box with water.
I pulled it out and cleaned it up wow stock air system holds a lot of water. i did not know there was a muffler in the fender and did not get that clean. water and mud managed to get though the new filter and well i now have new 16v I have been looking at the snorkel does it realy help get deeper or just a bit safer at the depth i can get? i have a dist. will it not short under water and the plugs or is there a way to protect them aswell. ???

i would like to go deeper further faster and smother then anything on the trail.
note the wave i am getting go at using that but practice is getting expencive. the new truck has much more on it and i would like to save it.

Welcome to the dark side.   2.5 inch black abs pipe works great, take out the innner fender, remove the airbox, drill a small pilot hole on the fender where you think the pipe should come out, and try to line things up when youre making the hole bigger.  You'll need a couple 22.5degree and 45 degree angles, I used a grey electrical cover for my top, painted it all bedliner red, big mistake, leave it black, looks like crap from the front.  be carefull drilling the hole through the fender, you dont want to mess it up.

there is more things you need to do like relocate breathed holes to the inside, ensure you have a tight fitting boot on the tranny and tcase shifter, holes in the floor and firewall plugged (trial and error) and take the carpet out
TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO JEEP HAS GONE BEFORE!

No offense, but with that much wave you need to slow down... that'll save you a LOT in the water =/

its weird how that works, I specifically remember waterup to my windsheild while driving through water in my old 89 tracker, back when I was less informed and more naive. howevery nothing bad ever came of it, at least that I know of, the truck is still on the road working fine. all the intakes were probalby filled with gook and crap. lol someone was lookin out for me that day. OH if your getting a snorkle make sure you route all the other vents up. ex. Diff, transfercase,  etc....

Ya slow down i am learning lol but it was a fun day,
but at the time of that pic after getting the wave going rather large i might add new truck will not do that. the grill was not in the water. but it was under water getting it started lol :o and no damage on that trip .
i did leave green paint on the rocks.  ;D

i had to put high temp silcon on the plugs wires were they conect to the plugs and the distributer cap. the massairflow sesor, the coil and the distributor cap itself also run a piece of small plastic hose from the distributor breather into the cab. here r some pics of my snorkle.

Just an extra water proofing idea i have used,

If u have a on board air supply fit a pipe to feed air into the distributer cap it will keep the water out better than any other type of cover / seal.

If you have no air supply, i have heard of people using fish tank aeration pumps as these in many cases are 12vDC

on my 94 there is a vent on top of the cap if urs doesn't have one less to worry about. the main thing is to waterproof everything that is electrical that makes ur motor run. i didn't cover everything just points of entry were water may be able to get in. mostly conections. i did cover all of the massairflow sesor ontop of the air tube.

The snorkel will save your engine.

I love my ARB (Safari) snorkel.  That "muffler" inside the fender, is called a "boom bottle"...

Be sure to goober it all up with RTV (Silicone Rubber) when you assemble it.

Click the Pic, to see it full size...

Here's a link to where I got mine (with another pic of the Gnewt).

Well...

It does have a bit more of a "throaty" sound, but nothing real noticable.  In fact, UK driver's (Snorkel on left, driver on right) report that they don't notice it.

For US drivers (at least on the Gnewt), you will notice a peak in the sound, around 3,300 rpm.  Well, that's what I notice, anyway.

Its noticeable on mine but not a lot. I don't know how they affect visibility on a LHD. The Safari Snorkels were designed on a RHD so the only bit you can see from the drivers seat is the intake  ;D

No visibility issues at all on the LHD.

I guess I know it's THERE, but it doesn't seem to be noticable.  I don't notice the roll-bar, either...
