Is there anything I can do to it that would increase the performance of it for less then $1000.

Is there anything that you would reccomend to do to it so I could drive it in the woods.

Any other tips or special knowledge I should know about the car would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Also, could you give me stuff to do to my Sidekick that would increase the performance of it for any amount of money? That would be for later on when I get more money. Thanks for the help.

Depending on how wild you want to go with it, a mild lift and a little larger tire will take you a long way off road.

Congrats on being a new zuk owner ...

My suggestions,
get a FSM (Factory Service Manual) ... probably about $40
Change ALL fluids (oil, diffs, tranny, etc).
Give it a tune up (plugs, cap, rotor) ... probably about $50
Adjust the valve lash ... DIY with the FSM

You will now have increased performance for $100 or so! The bonus is it will be a reliable and dependable vehicle.

If it has >150K miles I'd guess a timing belt wouldn't be a bad idea either.

If ya wanna offroad it, add spring spacers and a bodylift (under $200), and get tires/wheels (say $600).

That's how I'd spend your $1000

of more power you can't go wrong with a header and exhaust.  i have heard many people say that it is the biggest improvement they have made.

for the "woods"  i think a locker is one of the biggest upgrades you can make.  just because insted of spinning 2 tires, you spin 3 for more traction.  but a small lift and alittle bit bigger(not too big because of power loss) tire for ground clearance.  a small swamper(like a 30x11.50x15 TSL SX for $104 each) would work well in a woods kind of area

I'd go for 2" spring spacers, 30" swampers, and a rear locker... that'll get the ball rolling.

Well, that's the Calmini 6" combo lift.
I'm running Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's in 31 X 10.50, on 15 X 8 inch rims, with 2-3/4" of backspacing.

As soon as I have the money, I may be moving up to BF Goodrich Mud Terrains in 33 X 10.50 - I don't know that there would be any benefit in going to the 12.50 width.
