want to lift my GV .
« on: March 10, 2006, 05:00:24 AM »
hello 2 u all
i have the 03 model 1.6l 3 d'
i wanted to lift it about 5 c'm , here in my country -israel its not cheep at all - and im a student with very limited budget .
i started gadering information about lifting kits and got the impreshion that a castom made spring -the same as the original -only longer (how long exactly i dont know) will be OK -i meen with the same K or more and will be much more cheeper .
so if i want to lift my gv for about 5 c'm how long should the springs be (rear /front) and should i ask for bigger K ?   i  prefer  not to   use the  spacers !!
what about the struts (front /rear)? can i use the original ones or should i buy longer ones - (how long i dont know ) ' in the calmini 2.5" lift kit i saw :"front lsd drop bracket " can i buy them seperatly?

in other words i need some advice and data about :
spring length and K{  the  original  one's  or  the   aftemarket  ones .}
struts length- (or the original ones still will do?)
and any data about DIY

p.s
if some one has the mesurments of exsisting kit and can share them with me i will aprishiate it .
 Ã‚   thanks in advance

me personally for 5cm its alot of fukin around.. i would just go with a 2inch body lift, that was your ride doesnt get effected and you dont need to mess around with extensing your stearing rod or anylines. and you can easly make it or purchase one on ebay or http://www.rocky-road.com/kicksus.html there are 2inch body lifts ... jsut a few options and only my opinion..

here  is  a  small  problem  about  body  lift  -  its   not  legall   here  in  israel !!!! :-[ :-[
and  the   other   reason  i  dont  want  it  is  beacouse  im  not  plening  on  fiting  bigger  tires   so   for  me  its  usless .

so   im  left   with  the  option  of  longer  springs,  is     it possible  to   put   longer  springs (by 2")   in     the  front    without   replacing  the original  struts?
does   some  one   has   any    idea ?

The extension on the struts would be almost maxed out when sitting level, and the ride would suck.  It would be better to save money on springs using coil spacers, than to leave the struts alone.  Longer struts for these are a fairly odd size and difficult to find.  The only maker I am aware of is OME
http://www.rocky-road.com/kickome.html

Other options are custom made strut spacers
http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=8549.0
But you will have to do something with the tower brace after using these.

Another option is to bolt a steel extension on the top of the struts.  BDS includes these as part of their suspension lift kit.

Search around the forum for shock recomendations, their are several out there and you can look up the specs to get an idea of extended/compressed length.

For the springs I can't help really.  Most people seem to either go with the OME, Calmini kit or just use spacers.
2002 4DR Tracker V6 ZR2.... 1.5"/2" coil spacers front/rear, BDS Strut Extensions, 235/75R15 Cooper STT... They ROCK!!!

If you cant go with a body lift and you dont want spacers then your only other option would be www.calmini.com your can try http://www.rocky-road.com/kicksus.html but there 2" for 99+ GV includes spacers..

want  to  thank   you  guys  for  the   info ........

i  can't  understand   why  adding  spacers wont  make  the  strut  to  be  at  max  length  on sitting level but  changing  the  length  of  the  spring  (to the  same  length  of  origfinal  spring+spacer) will  make  the  strut   to  be   at  max   length   on   sitting level
.
i  allso   wanted  to  know  the  advanteges    of   adding  the   steel extension on the top of the struts
? ::) ::)

sherifon,
to use the spacers for a 99+ GV you need to have the Strut spacer as well(or the strut extenstions the_maplebar stated above), which is the steel extenstion you talk about. the older vitaras pre 99 you were able to flip the strut mount and thatwould give you the extension you would need to use the stock struts and not have them maxed out at sitting level..you cant run a longer spring with out the strut extenstion and still use stock struts.. im sure you would be able to do it with a spring only 5cms longer but not 2inchs.. and as the_maplebar stated your ride would be the shits and your stuts would be maxed out.. check out http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=8549.0 for a kit that would suit your year GV and come with everything you would need for a spring spacer kit.. im sure if you wanted to get a longer spring and just use your current struts JDMCRX would machine you the strut spacers you would need to have to run the longer springs or order the strut extenstions from BDS.... both for a price of course.

im  asking  becouse  the  longer  spring    will  be  jummpy  with the  same "K"   so  .....

and  another  last   qestion  about  this  topic  :
i  noticed  thast  the original rear   springs  are   a  beet  longer    than  the   front original ones  ...

the rear spring are longer but yuou have to think.. what does your front have that your back doesnt.. a motor..put a motor on your rear springs.. no more lift.. it would prob be smaller then the stock front shock.. and as for longer shocks.. i wouldnt know what to ask for.. i dont no any other model vehical that you could replace yours with and i dont no of a place that you can buy just the springs for a lift.... and yer still gonna need either strut spacers or the extenstions we talked about above.

Front shocks for a 1989 Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser work great for the rear of a Tracker/Sidekick/Vitara/Grand Vitara/etc with about 2" of lift.  You should be able to get those.

The fronts, you need to either buy some purposely made lift struts or get some extenders.  Because of their design those are your best two options. :P
