Transfer case woes
« on: April 03, 2006, 02:56:02 PM »
Im heading out to flat tow my samurai this friday....about 2000 miles round trip...

I had the rear drive shaft out, but needed to move it about half a mile, so i put it in 4-hi and locked the front hubs....

This is the first time i have ever used it in 4-hi or in 'front wheel drive'

I got this grinding vibration almost immedately.....sounds ok when power is on, but grinds loudly when coasting, clutch in and out...

My mechanic checked the TC said it was not turning smoothly in 4-hi and advised me to pull the front drive shaft for the trip and to get a new TC when i get back.....

It has always worked fine in 4-low and 2-hi, so my question would be is it really neccessary to pull the front shaft until the TC gets replaced?

Any comments would be appreciated....

Oh and one more thing, its a 1991 sammy, refit from a 2wd, so i dont know what year the TC case is, but will any TC fit?

Unlocking the front hubs to tow it would have the same effect as removing the shaft.

All T cases have the same mounting bolt pattern but the flanges are different have a look here for some good info on them http://moose.ca/~slowzuki/slowzuki/tech_info/suzuki_t-cases/index.htm
