Tracker gears in a samurai
« on: April 09, 2006, 09:32:49 PM »
I have heard that you are able to use the 5.12 gears from the front of a tracker in the front and rear of a  samurai. what needs to be done to do this?

any info is greatly appreciated.

my lug nuts require more torque then my engine makes ;)

You can do that, but the trac/kick housings are weaker than the sami housings (steel VS Alum)  You would be better off to swap the gears into the sami housings.

Yep.  That's a steel third from a Samurai.

As I understand it, you can swap the aluminum third for the steel but as Brently/Purevil71 sez, "aluminum weak, steel strong".

Also, I have heard that the axle spline count on the Samurai is different from front to rear so you would have to take out the side gears from the steel third and put them into the aluminum third.

By the time you have done all this work, you could simply rip out the ring an pinions from the aluminum thirds and install them in the steel thirds with a rebuild kit and end up with strong, reliable differentials.

I am working on a pictorial article fo Acks FAQ describing the transplant process that should be available by the first of June.  In the meantime, try a search for differential at the FAQ (see the link in the signature below) for some good articles on diff teardown and rebuilding.

Hope this helps!

BTW, Brently: I should have everything done except the R&P installation when I show up for the Fabfest so it should be a quick job!  I'm bringing my welder and my nifty portable sandblaster!  I  hope the farm store sells fine grade sand. ;D

What you have pictured in the entire 3rd member.  Keep in mind here that we are talking about front track/kick gears and not rears.  Rears are too big and will not work.  You can swap a front track/kick 3rd directly into the samurai as they both have 22 spline sidegears.  The disadvantage is that they are aluminum and prone to breakage when abused.

For the rear the samurai runs 26 spline side gears versus the 22 spline track/kick ones.  You can swap the samurai 26 spline sidegears into the track/kick 3rd and it will bolt in but the housings were never designed for continual use and may suffer oiling problems.  The better bet is to take the ring and pinion gears and install them into your samurai 3rd.  To achieve this you will need a can and spacer set from a zuk vendor.  These are necessary due to the slight differences in the ring and pinion/carrier sizes.  The can prevents the cross shafts from coming out of the diff and the spacer is placed behind the ring gear to make it the same width as a sammy one.  Locally Breeze is your best bet.

I see from your profile that, like Ian sez, Breeze industries is the place for you to go for the conversion kit.  Page 2 at the bottom of their online catalog:

None of this pesky exchange rate business for you.  Plus They are nice people to do business with!  ;D

No, you cannot simply transplant Tracker fronts into a Samurai.

Quote
For the rear the Samurai runs 26 spline side gears versus the 22 spline track/kick ones.  You can swap the samurai 26 spline sidegears into the track/kick 3rd and it will bolt in but the housings were never designed for continual use and may suffer oiling problems.

Some assembly/disassembly is required.

If you are having trouble with the terminology, you might consider downloading a Samurai Factory Service Manual (FSM) at one of the many Samurai websites that hosts a copy.  Look at the section that covers the differentials. It contains an exploded view showing all the parts.

On the front yes you can pull the sammy one and swap the tracker one directly in (both 22 spline sidegears).

As I said before in the rear you would need to put the sammy side gears (26 spline) into the tracker third.  Biggest concern there is the oiling issue which may lead to burning out the bearings although I know of at least one person who has done this without any problems.ÂÂ
