what engine oil

what engine oil

should i use in my zook (1,6 8v) mineral or synthetic??  only the best is gooood enough for my precious   :D

This is a hot button topic with some people.  My opinion is that any economic benefit is questionable in changing to synthetic on a relatively high mileage engine.  Since I have had no engine problems using good quality mineral oil in every vehicle I have owned, I personally cannot justify the cost of the synthetic.

I use mobil 1 synthetic in all my vehicles, It costs the same for me to do the oil change with synthetic, as it would to have someone else change it with regular oil. Thats the justification I give my self. Also it helps me feel better about longer drain intervals, since I might drive my offroader 3000 miles in an entire year :)

Well i´m doing the work myself and mobil 1 isn´t that expensive so i guess i´ll go with that.

It took me a LONG time to switch to synthetic.. but what sold me was when I bought a used Town car with 165K on the clock..  it had synthetic from new, and I had proof with all oil change receipts........  so I just kept up the same brand and type, Mobil 1..

I took the heads off at 190K and the damned thing was brand new inside... it was amazing..

I had another Town car, with the same engine (4.6) with 125K, on normal oil, but still regular changes... it was OK when I pulled it apart for a head gasket leak...... but not nearly as nice as the one with 190K...

since that day.. I use synthetic in EVERYTHING.. I mean, it really isn't very much more per year. I mean, when a tank of gas cost over $60.00... a $20 dollar bill more for synthetic oil isn't an issue...

i'm switching to valvoline synthetic 5-40 or somthing, don't remember what i bought.

i will not use regular oil anymore.

hi,  i'll be using the Quaker State 4X4 semi-synthetic (10W40) here in the northern Minnesota summer and go same stuff 5W30 in the winter.  have used that oil for years in all my vehicles up here with no problems.  my tracker has 115k on it and getting over 30mpg (1.6 8v 5-speed).  just had both axles, tranny, and transfer case fluids changed over to Amsoil.  just got this tracker recently and have used Amsoil for a number of years with no complaints/problems at all.

I am running a blend of both which works really well for my usage,

mine also sets alot, last two year I have put less than 5K on it...

I had a 1991 Sidekick 2-door 5spd 1.6L 8V. The previous owners brother was an Amsoil dealer so the only thing that wasnt Amsoil with this Kick was the powersteering fluid!! The guy said that he changed every fluid in it to Amsoil synthetic within the last  5 months. I believed him because he had a few spare liters for the engine. Right after purchasing it I switched to regular 10w-40 oil because I discovered it was using oil and I wasnt going to pay the price of synthetic for nothing, but anyways. I also had a 1989 Mazda B2600i 4x4 pickup that I changed over to synthetic. I put Redline synthetic t-case, trans, and diff oil in it but had regular oil in the engine. A few weeks after changing over and working the oil into the transmisson and diffs ETC there was a huge improvement in shifting performance and smoothness. Out of the 9 vehicles I ve had the one's that had syntehtic were by far the best performing, nicest to shift and smoothest running. I recommend running REDLINE synthetic drivetrain lubricant for all 4x4 vehicles but not in the engine itself unless its new or newer. I like Quaker state 4x4 semi-synthetic engine oil and recommend it for motors. :-\

I leak about a quart a month so I don't even drain the oil....just replace the filter twice a year.  8) This has been going on for about 3 years now, even before I owned it. Maybe it's time to replace that seal?

Trouble is, if it isn't leaking from the very lowest point, you are leaving lots of smaller than filter size contaminants, including less viscous hydrocarbons in your oil pan, diluting the oil you are pumping through your engine.


As far as burning synthetic oil.. yes, I have experienced that too.....  I agree with the blend for engines such as these.

I use Mazzola 0W-1 oil in mine.  Nice and thin...  lets me identify where all the leaks are.

I run Mobil 1 synth 5w30 year round in the GV and change it every 3k.

On my Ranger and Tracker I run Valvoline high mileage 5w30.  Both have over 150k on the clock and I just don't want to deal with leaks.  Neither leave spots now but there's oil on the bottoms of the engine.
I had a '93 Tracker a few years ago that I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic on.  WHOOPS!  The couple spots of oil it might leave now and then turned into BIG spots of oil and I was adding over a quart every other week or so.  Synthetic can act as a detergent and because of it's slick synthetic nature it can clean crap out of high mileage engines and then get through the leaks they were sorta sealing.  I understand the performance benefits but after that little debacle I keep the synth for the newer (less leak prone) stuff. :P
