I forgot about that rule.   You see people importing some of the early 90 Japanese tuner cars now through canada because the 15 years are up.

My ex-gf has a Jimny, still stock but has done some mild off-roading. the engine has the same bhp as my 8V Vitara 80bhp. The Vit makes its power lower though. Last summer we did a 9 hour drive to Scotland (we went the pretty way, lol). I certainly can't imagine doing that in a sammy, especially as I had a bad back at the time!

They have them in Costa Rica, I rented one for a week with the gf, had 205/70 street tires, otherwise it did all right on the rough stuff....

Didn't someone say they're actually smaller than a Sami?

I know the Sami as we (North America) had it continued on overseas for several years with a coil spring suspension as well.  Looked mostly the same just with a better suspension that we never got. :(

I know around 99-01 when I was talking to guys in New Zealand a lot there was one guy with a pair of tricked out Samurais, one had leaves and the other had coils.  From what he said I gathered that the Jimny was a totally different beastie.

They sell them in Costa Rica. Just buy one down there and have it shipped back to the us or canada. (it would probably be easier to ship it to canada and then drive it down into the us(so the us customs bastards cant say it is a terrorist weapon ;))

these are the things that make me despise the us government. they think they know more about cars than they actually do. Common sense says that the Jimny is no worse polluting than any thing else on the roads in the US and would pass the smog tests, but the us government, and their best friend consumer reports says that the jimny is a bad car, with no reasoning or even seeing or knowing what it is, and that it cant come across our borders and be registered, just because they assume it is not as good as the cars here, when in all other areas of the world, the car is welcomed and very liked. stupid political people stuff ::) ::) ::) And the worst part is that it is all about money  >:(

Actually, it's probably about crashworthiness.  I doubt most of those Jimnys have dual air bags, side impact beams, and are made to USA impact standards.

Most auto makers, world wide, use US/Cali emissions standards and the OBD-II computer system in their modern cars.  I doubt emissions is the problem.

All I know is that it is a sweet little 4x4. I love the square look and it looks modern too. People like Hummers..and they look like a brick. There is a square looking Mercedes Suv. Land rovers are pretty square looking.  If they offered it at a reasonable price it would sell like hotcakes....Piss me off, all we get is that crappy new Grand Vitara.  When did they start making the Jimny's? I may consider having one imported to Canada when they are 15 years old....

  I'm starting to underatand why people start Militia's and stop paying taxes.... >:(

Howdy,
I lived in Germany in 2000 when the Jimny debuted there and have crawled all over it.  Also, I believe the coil sprung Samurai sold from 1997-1999(?) was simply a interim model/test bed before tooling/production of the new Jimny was completed.  The suspension between the two appears to be identical.

That being said, the Jimny does look smaller than a Samurai but they are really close in size.  I think the Sidekick like front windshield and targa bar makes it look smaller than it actually is.  I also was not happy with the new design layout-gas tank in the middle of the floorplan, super small, reverse rotation front diff, etc.  To me it seemed like Suzuki cross-bred a Samurai with a Sidekick and then tried to make it even more street friendly-a more sophisticated Samurai.  They were a hit in Germany though and new Samurai sales in Germany stopped in 2001.

You can't really import one and expect to drive it on the US roads either.  The magic rules are 21 years for the EPA and 25 years for the DOT.  I know, I imported a 1956 VW Beetle back with me.  I really wanted to grab a new Suzuki Samurai LWB but I simply couldn't do it legally.

I want a militia ;) and suzukis and toyota hilux diesels would be my vehicles of choice ;D
