homemade downpipe

hey guys, i'm cheap, didn't pay for the truck (89 sidekick 1.6 8v), don't want to pay huge bugs for a catalytic converter and downpipe (looks as though they are only sold together).  they are both shot.   i can get a universal cat for $50 but downpipes aren't available.
question... can i cut the flange off the old downpipe, weld it to a 2" 45* bend with some straight pipe and one more 45* (to match the shape of the old downpipe) then to the new cat?
the OEM downpipe has to pipes that run parrallel to eachother... my question is weather a single downpipe with no insulation (ceramic or asbestos or whatever the OE downpipes are coated in) will work.   what problems i might run into. 
any thoughts?

The stock down pipe twin tube thing is
a double wall pipe to reduce under hood
temps, but you could use an exhaust Y
and put regular exhaust pipe on that, or
get a header and go from there.

the header is money i don't wish to spend, good idea though.  but the Y pipe, do you think that would reduce temps a bit?  if I welded a y pipe to the flange and ran two pipes down to another y then into the cat it would be very much like the OEM setup, without the insulant properties of course.   I would imagine as you say, that underhood temps may get pretty hot, but will it be critical?

Not critical, but with a turbo it gets pretty warm   ;)

wildgoody, i'd like to know more about your intercooled turbo...  fascinating.  you must've constructed a custom manifold as well...
