home made bumpers
« on: January 30, 2005, 10:53:43 AM »
anyone have any pics or plans for home made Sammy bumpers?  I'm tinkering with the idea of the "indestructible" bumper.

show me what's on front of your rig.

Aw, heck - the factory unit us made from recycled Kirin beer cans - get a case of beer, and a couple of tubes of epoxy, and make several - you can carry two or three spares!  Just kidding, who needs spares?

I don't quite think you want indestructible bumpers, you want some thing to takes a good hammering but still gives in before it transfers the force to the frame and bend its. It's much easier to fit a new bumper than straighten a frame  ;D

Heres what I built for my mates 413, he didn't want tube so we went with a 1/8" plate instead. It's not quite "home built" as I have access to my mates sheet metal shop with all the toys.

from this

to this

getting there

A shop with sheet metal tools/toys   >:(
Hey, that's cheating  ;D looks nice tho

I'm thinking about using a plasma cutter to
make "score" lines, then the steel stays nice
and straight, but can be bent for the angles
and the score seems welded solid again, should
work good, if I ever get around to doing it

Here is a test fit of my bumper, it is not quite finished in this pic but you get the idea.

Instead of making an "indestructable bumper" I wanted to make a strong light bumper.  The subframe is steel, and everything else is aluminum.  Every thing bolts together so I can easily replace a broken or mangled piece.
The entire bumper without winch, but with M/L stops, tow bar mount etc. weighed in at 38 lbs.  That was lighter than the old bumper that I removed.
I'll try to have updated completed pics on Wednesday.

I'm not a big fan of exterior polished diamond plate but that looks very nice.   Great work to make the thing clean functional, durable, and replacable while keeping weight in check.

Weight of a bumper is one of my big concerns on the Kick.

It's not cheating it's using what resources one has  ;D

I can't remember (due to CRAFT disease) if you were one of the people that wanted a plan of my Escudo bumper, but I've got the CAD drawing done but want to laser one out and fold it up first before I post it to make sure its fits OK.
I'm slow but getting there  ;D

Hey, thanks for all the compliments guys. FYI I'm not a big fan of diamond plate either, but it was free, so why not.  I can always paint it black later.  To be honest the shiny bumper looks out of place on my Sammy,  But it was fun to design and build.
Just for kicks here is another shot mounted.  I think I'm going to put some lights in the "ears" yet.

It is has been frickin cold here, but the prodjects must go on.  I still have to reinstall my t-case, but I'm hoping for a semi warm day.  40-45 would be nice.

That DeWalt is a 18 volt cordless impact wrench, the best stink'n tool I ever bought.  I don't leave home without it.

So, how do you "score with a plasma cutter?  A friend of mine just got on from his brother but isn't the best at using it yet.

I've been wanting to build a rear bumper but no one around here does any bending.  It all has to be drafted and sent out... so it cost big $$$
