has any one done one in a sami if so how hard was it.  if so is it a turbo and how is the power compared to a 1.3 and what kind of mileage do you get. i have a sami with a spring over on 30 inch super swampers i only drive it on the street only getting 16 mpg thanks

I have, I installed a 95 VW 1.9 Turbo Diesel in my Sammy. It has way more power than the stock 1.3 and a little bit more than a 16V. The install is actually very easy using the ACME adapters. I am no auto mechanic but I did it in 1 full weekend. My motor is new with only 2500 miles on it now and I'm getting an average of 27mpg. I've heard that if you use the non turbo 1.6 you can get 40mpg but not nearly as much power as a turbo. I had to run 33" tires to get it in the correct RPM range. My tranny, R&Ps and t-case are stock. I cruise the interstate at 70mph at 2700 RPM. I can accelerate on any hill with no problem at all. It will easily do 80 but Sammys start getting a little scary at that speed.

That brings up a question that I have had for some time regarding the VW diesel. What is the red line RPM for these engines?

I have been looking at engine options for my new Sammy project. Looking back, is there anything else you considered dropping in? A friend of mine has a Mazuki. He has three Mazda turbo rotary engines. I considered going that route, but I want something a little different. Anyone else have any other ideas? This turbo diesel idea sounds great... What's your 1/4 mile like?

the 1.6TD likes to rev when needed too. It can't run sustained high rpm's or your exhaust gas temps. start to climb. under 2800 for a cruising RPM is typical.

As for other engines. Any 2wd rear wheel drive engine /tranny combo could be made to fit. The most common being a sidekick/tracker 1.6 due to ease of adaptability to the sammy trans.

A toyota 22R would be a good option. Personally I would stay away from the rotory they are high revving screamers and not really suited to offroading.

I've read some pretty scary threads about how much a diesel swap costs, including the 4000 for the engine what did your swap cost?

How much extra stuff did you have to find in the way of engine electronics etc or did some of it come with your engine?

Its just like any other type of swap, you can spend a little or alot. I have heard of people spending as little as $500 and others as much as $5000. I bought a new engine so mine was on the upper scale of price.
There really is no electronics involved other than a couple wires for the glow plug relay which you can get from ACME or pull from the donar vehicle. Other than that the radiator is the only other thing you need from the VW.

No, you don't need the whole car. There are only 2 other parts you need besides the engine. The radiator and glowplug wires/relay, you can get both of those through ACME or a donar car.
