Best bangs for the buck....

1) Make sure it is running right and is well tuned

2) K&N airfilter insert in the stock box

3) 2 1/4" exhaust with a Turbo type muffler from manifold to the bumper

Woke mine right up, snappier, generally more power across the board........side benefit

Gas a solid jump in gas mileage.

Hope that helps

I have the tune, 2 inch exhaust, but not the K&N.  Will it still help out?

For sure

The insert lets the engine breath better, bear in mind that the filter by itself will likely not make a difference you can feel but should show up in  gas mileage.

Beyond that basic stuff you start to spend larger money so I hope it works for you.

Sorry no sympathy at $3.20

Fuel here is $4.36 per US gallon today

Check the timing and add about 5 degrees, as long as it doesn't ping.  :)

It costs more, but a header definitely helps, too!

2) K&N airfilter insert in the stock box

3) 2 1/4" exhaust with a Turbo type muffler from manifold to the bumper

whats everyones take on the difference between the insert and the cone filters???

what about 2" exhaust instead of 2 1/4"???

Difference between cone and insert is how much you want to spend and what kind of driving you do...

Insert is the least expensive and generically the most practical for off road use.

Cone is great for pavement running and rice rockets but can lead to problems off road, tends to cost a little more too.

2" vs 2 1/4" exhaust

Mathmatically the optimum is the 2 1/4 for the 1.6 8 and 16 valve engines...2 inch will work just fine but if you are doing an exhaust might as well go for what should be the optimum.

first off
YOU RULE
those answers are freakin great
(im a little thrown back)

I intend to do my exhaust (very soon)

why is a 2.25 better than a 2, optimally?
what about when split to dual pipe (mathematically?)

this is what I wanted

Header -> CAT -> Muffler -> Duals
(so Im doing research into each one)

If you go to your local library you can get a reference book on Sonic waves and pulses...

In it you can find the formulas to work out the optimum diameter and lenghts of intake and exhaust systems.......then apply it "practically" to different applications.

Sorta like this...

Take the displacement of an engine and the rpm...there is a formula to calculate the volume of the pulse entering the exhaust.

Knowing the size of the port lets you calculate close to the optimum velocity for the exhaust gas.

Working back further you can figure the maximum diameter of the tube to maintain the velocity.

Takes a little work but you can figure out how big you can go without reducing the velocity of the exhaust gas...while creating the minimum backpressure.

Then you back it up by building a few and proving the results...

Best performance best value I have found is a 2 1/4" exhaust with a high quality Turbo type muffler.....if you can afford it get a "Good" header that has ports that match the shape of the exhaust ports. (and a CAT if law requires in your area).

Split exhaust are for looks....doesn't do diddly for the performance...but if it's the look you want go for it.
