im looking for some help PLEASE
« on: May 01, 2006, 02:40:59 PM »
hey everyone
i just recently purchased a 1998 sidekick JX i think. im not sure of the model i know its a sidekick but i dont know if its a JX or what!?!? its a 2-DR Hardtop but everywhere i have looked says that the 2-dr never came with a hard top. so im wondering if anybody can help me with this:

the hardtop is in 2 sections (one over the driver + passenger and one over the back) but it seems to have a pretty bad rattle and looks to be missing a latch or 2 so if anyone has and advice on where the latches go or even better yet a picture your hellp and thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Dan

Sounds like a convertable with an aftermarket
hard top. If it were a factory hard top the top
would be steel.

Rattles, often a sign of poorly built
aftermarket accesories, I have no
idea where you could find latches

I purchased a sammy a while back that has a removable hardtop and the only thing holding it on was the bolts behind the front seats where the rear seat hand grips were.  the latches were on the top but no catches on the car body.  The type of latch is called an over-center draw latch.  found a bit of info on the web but haven't found a local supplier yet, still looking for them.  Might have to mail order some replacement parts from the internet.

Really the only latches on the hardtop are right at the back and they are steel latches but the holes for the latches which you are talking are there drilled and tapped and everything just the clips or latches are missing.

Yep, a factory hardtop is all steel and non-removeable and looks like a short 4 door style.  As for your top, you can do what I did and just make some hardware to bolt it down.  This keeps it from rattling.  I got my removeable hard top and it was missing a few pieces of hardware.  I looked everywhere for replacements and couldn't find any, so I made some brackets to bolt the rear portion on and used the original hardware on the front portion, since I will likely take it off more often.  I can get pics if you want to see what I did.

Your local hardware store will have draw latches.  You might find something there that will work.

Find some old Toyota tail gate latches. They were spring loaded and would  be easy to install and the top would pop on and off in seconds. 75 ish models...They can probably be ordered new.

That's a good question - I'm not sure if they actually manufactured them for any of the years.... they may have just purchased them from besttop to sell with certain vehicles. all hardtops will fit any year, 89-98. You just need to remove all of the softop hardware, and install 2 plastic blocks for the rear section of the hardtop, they bolt in where the the softtop prop rod hooks are.

My hardtop makes some bad noises too, it rattles, squeaks, etc. I bought it cause it was cheap, and I thought it would be better for the winter, but I don't really notice a difference.

I am definetely getting the Hardtop roof version Sidekick. I really liked my last unit that had the OEM 2piece removable top but have always enjoyed solid cab vehicles better than convertibles. Its awsome that the Sidekick has so many styles.
