wheel differences
« on: May 07, 2006, 09:47:28 PM »
Are the stock steel wheels from a Grand Vitara and an XL-7 the same? Getting differing opinions from local junkyards and want to make sure I get a complete set that are the same as I cobble together five new rims for a second set of tires.

Thanks,

Jeff

The Grand Vitara wheel and the XL-7 (16x7)  are the same the Vitara(16x6.5 i think) and tracker (15x6.5 or 7?) wheels are different

The Tracker's steel wheels are 15x5.5 the upgraded alloy wheels are 15x6, but those probably won't fit on a GV or XL7 except possibly if you use wheel spacers.

Yes, the Vitara are 16x6.5, which is what my current wheels are. I've got a set of Wrangler MT/Rs in 245/75/16 to put on and need another set of wheels, so wanted to go with the wider wheels of the Grands, but some of the local parts people were giving me a hard time - even though I was pretty sure the XL7 and Grand were the same, just thought I'd check. Scary how stupid some of the people selling parts are _ one guy said - "they are wider, it will mess up your vehicle, especially if it is 4wd." Plus, they want more for junkers than I can get new ones for on ebay. Crazy.

Thanks,

Jeff

I am almost certain that GV and XL-7 rims are identical. 16X7 and stuff.... Yea, I see many XL-7's that have the exact same rims that I do on my GV.

if it's possible I'd double check before you buy just in case.. can't be too sure you know
2000 Grand Vitara.. boondox coil spacer lift w/ pro comp 2 inch lift shocks and ome struts. 225/75 R16 Kumho Mt's, powdercoated wheels, rear brake line relocation and stuff to acomodate. custom exhaust and intake along with some 1 off accesories.

I would second that.  At one point I saw an OEM replica wheels site, can't find it now, but it had photos of the various styles of wheels associated with different trim packages.  I am sure they are all 16x7, but some may "look" slightly different depending on year, trim etc.

just an update - bought a set of GV/XL-7 rims (16x7 vs 16.6.5 for the stock Vitara) and no rubbing except a tiny bit at full lock with the 245/75/16s. With the stock rims my 235/70/16s rubbed more. Crazy.

Thanks,

Jeff

A bit late but here goes:

GV / XL7 wheels are interchangeable - 16 x 7

1600 GV and widebody not the same - either 15 x 5.5 or 15 x 6.5 or 16 x 6.5 BUT different off set.

The GV / XL7 rims stick out towards the guards more - the caliper / disc combo is not the same. The caliper is a larger design and thus the reason for the off set. GV / XL7's MUST run 16" rims - 15" rims WILL NOT WORK  ::). I know this because I just did a 4" lift on my V6 GV and thought I would run the 235/85 x 16 rubber off of my Widebody BUT the wheels would not fit so I have to swap the tyres to my GV rims. On the positive side though - the rims will then fit both vehicles  ;D.

Just to add a little more info to what ZeusZuki said. The GV/XL-7 16"x7" rims are a 5P offset and the 16"x6.5" rims as fitted to our 2.0 V6 Vitara/Escudo(1.8 Sidekick Sport) has a 25P offset. The brake discs are the same diameter and thickness but Suzuki shifted the disc position further outboard by 17mm.
