New guy with urgent problem
« on: May 10, 2006, 11:04:23 PM »
Hey guys quick intro... My name is Josh I live in Tuolumne, CA outside of Modesto. I just sold my 1995 Jeep ZJ 5.2v8 and bought a 1987 SPOA Samurai with a 1.3L screaming hampsterunder the hood, and 28inch tires. It also has a lisence plate that reads
RL   OVR....... ha ha. Whoever had the sami b4 me did nothing to the pitman steering system after going spoa so I am thinking about the z-link since I can't afford the OTT. Will a z-link be ok or will it rub when I flex off road? Also the steering stabilizer broke off yesterday going through some mud and I noticed that its bracket had already been welded back on once before. Is there an aftermarket fix for the steering stabilizer or do I have to reweld the old one? Here is a pic of my new toy so you can see what I'm working with

who makes the easiest to install and most durable OTT?
What is the big difference between the OTT and OTT2 system?

here are pics of my steering stabilizer the non mangled end attaches to the frame crossmember and the other end I think attaches to the pitman arm...???

You could just weld a bolt to some angle iron and make a new frame mount for that, mine bolts to the front end and to the tie rod it's an after market type about three times the size of stock, if it's breaking off of the frame it might be shot? or bent?  if your low on bucks sky mfg sells the ott parts separate so you can buy what ya need, good stuff, mine is from trail tough it was around 270.00 or so and came with a new tie rod and ends(drag link too), I had the rocky road on it and gave it away for less than half of what it cost, I will save up and get a sky kit down the road with the fj80 tre's and go totally over the top so the rocks do not hit it, have fun with your new rig you will like it once you get it going.

I have a Breeze draglink that does the job but still does not eliminate SPOA bumpsteer.  It is made of a single piece of forged steel -- superior in strength to most Z-links which are usually several pieces of steel bar/plate welded together.

The BEST way to go is an OTT system.  It completely cures bumpsteer and gets the draglink components out of the way of the suspension (and the ground!).

As for the Steering stabilizer, many vendors offer aftermarket bolt-in replacements.  On a Samurai, the Steering Stabilizer also helps dampen vibration effects of worn steering knuckle ball seals.  So if you feel vibrations in the steering, it may also be time to replace the felt/rubber seals on the backside of the front axle's steering knuckles (I believe that's what they are called...)   The felt seal set is inexpensive and easy to install.  You'll need to do a bit more disassembly to replace the rubber seals, but again, it's mostly an investment in labor, not parts.

Again,  you can get by with an inexpensive draglink while saving up for an OTT system.  That is what I have done.  Just don't go cheep and buy a Z-link that'll leave you stranded on the trail after some hard wheeling.
