Calmini Cage
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:41:56 AM »
Has  anybody rolled with the camamini cage installed?
Did it hold up?
How does the cage get tied in?
Does it tie in to the frame?
Is there welding?-Or just bolting?
Dimensions?
Is really all that much cheaper and safer to make your own?
Thanks

I am sure it would get damaged in the event of a roll-over and I think it required welding and drilling for the install?

Will look way better, for sure.

For a SideKick?
Heres what i know.
1- Is really all that much cheaper and safer to make your own?  buying the cage is cheaper than having a shop built one from scratch.
2- Is there welding?-Or just bolting?
Yes, there is welding, grinding, and bolting.
3- Does it tie in to the frame?
No, it doesn't tie into the frame (be better if ya did tho)
4- Has  anybody rolled with the camamini cage installed?Did it hold up?

haven't heard anybody rolling one with a Calmini cage in a Kick, yet. I know I've come close, more times than I would like.
5- About so big by so big

If you're tall you will need some padding on the cage too, to protect your head.

any volunteers to see how it holds up?  ;)
just kidding. I'm sure it's designed well, and will hold up much better than nothing. If Calmini was selling a roll cage that wasn't functional and only for "looks" they would most definatly have to specify that about 20 times on their website. Roll cages are good insurance for your life.

It sure does look good though- structurally
I am about 6'1 so I probally would need padding
Is it adviseable to make your own- if you have never made one before?
It is something you wouldn't ot cut shortcuts on
I have a 15 month old girl - I woukd like to give her and my familly some protection!
Myself included Does it protect passengers in the rear?
With a 12 ton pipe bender can you bend tubing the same dimesion as calmini used?
"any volunteers" - that was a good one! ;D
It would be interesting to see how it holds up
Thanks for the help

But, to make it stronger you would need a cross brace like so.
This would make the cage stronger and not collapse would rolled over.

If your going to bend your own cage up, make sure you use a tube bender instead of a pipe bender.

A pipe bender will weaken the bends where you bend it (There has to be a better way of saying that...).

Thanks for the tips
How much are tube benders?
I found a cheapy 12 ton pipe bender at harbor freight for around 80 dollars I belive. glad I didn't get it.
Will that additional brace interfere with the rear passengers at all?
thanks again

You can get your dimensions and stuff and lay out your cage and probably get the material bent at a machine shop for a reasonable price I'm going to build an external cage with 2 inch thin wall carbon like schedule 10 or 20.. which should be stout enough, or you could just weld it out with regular old pipe fittings use small bore piping run straight down through the floor and buttweld directly to frame or build a support with a peice of pipe coming up and go all the way to the roof and use long radius 90's and come across the top with a peice of pipe would be stout as hell still
