HMM, Sputter??
« on: February 09, 2005, 06:50:31 AM »
Was driving my Sami the other day and it kinda sputtered a bit and then picked up again. Thought that it may have been a little cold but I had it warmed up and it did it to me again. This is the 1.6 16v FI engine. It is almost like it wants to die and then it gets going again. Figured it may be a fuel prob but just checking to see if someone has had a similar problem.

Sounds like you've got a bit of water in your fuel!

Dump a bottle of HEET in there.  That'll fix her!
Oh, and yeah, you should probably change your fuel filter.  What a fun job.  I always splash gasoline everywhere, when I do that.

Sounds logical, it may be water from being in the shop and then going out into the cold air without a full tank of fuel, or just dust and crap that may have gotten in the tank and lines during the build.

Thanks will try and if doesn't work as Arnie says:

I'll be bawck!!

Well changed the filter, was a little on the dirty side, checked for water in the fuel out of the tank, none. Didn't fix the problem. Would the injectors be dirty, if I am getting fuel to the cylinders, would I be getting fuel on the plugs if it is not firing?

I am hoping that it's not electrical, or worse ECM!!!

If the rig is firing properly how often should you see spark from an individual plug when cranking er over??

Make sure you have the plug grounded
at all times, you can fry electronic ignition
parts if it's not.

I was thinking about the sputter I am getting. It seems as though engine just shuts down and then starts firing again, it may be the momentum of the vehicle just jump starting the engine and going again. Before I go buyin' all sorts of parts any ideas what to start looking at. Hopefully it is a loose ground somewhere.
