Of course... if you build your own gas tank, you'll need to find a sending unit that will work.... hmmmm....

Anyone have a summet catalog handy? Maybe one of those racing plastic tanks will fit?

Or we could install a fuel cell....

I don't think it is the best option though

Fuel cell - heh - that's what I meant :)

I have not been under my sami in a while... but maybe I can take some measurements and sketch out a plan for welding my own tank.

I like the extra can setup.  I installed a 20 gal tank under the bed of my willys PU (easy with no emmision hookups) and had 45 gal total w/ factory tank and two - 5 gal cans.  when I filled it up I could barely get up the hills.  With extra cans ONLY, you can shed weight if you have to.

Exactly! Its so easy to bring along extra gas using Jerry Cans. Bring along two 5 gal's and you got over 75 liters of gas, thats if you've got a full tank [ with the 2- DOOR ]. I personaly would bring a utility trailer [ if possible ] when going on an excursion or whatever SO storing it wouldnt be too much of a hassle.  Though you could just bring it inside the SUV. I am sure alot of people have small utility trailers? The only thing I think would have been better [ for 2-doors ] is if Suzuki had used the larger capacity 4-door tank! Yes it would be kool if a Sidekick had a 20 gal tank like the JEEP Cherokee, right.

In my X-90 I get around 27mpg in the mountains, it actually drops on the interstate to around 22mpg. Since it's tank is the same as a 2 door Track/kick, that goves me around a 200 mile range before needing to look for a gas station. After driving it back from Florida spending 42 hours and 1316miles on the road, I can tell you that by the time it needed gas, I was usually more than ready for a stretch break! Of course I realize that most people don't travel so much in their Zuks and that the range just determines how often you need to get fuel during the week, but I don't mind the range on long trips. It give me an excuse to stop, get out, stretch and look around some... 8)
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Well - 5 more Gal is a 50% increase in range... I'm still wondering how hard it would be to fab one. I could build the bottom plate really thick to make a kind of "built in" armor / skit plate.

This is so silly.....need extra range?  Buy a couple jerry cans, a stick or flux core welder and steel to fab a mount on the tailgate for them!  If you don't go nuts w/ the welder, you'll still come in aboult $100 shy of the petroworks 15 gal price tag and about 5 gallons over the final capacity(and you will have a welder at the end of the day!).    Besides, all the folks who are complaining about getting 20-23mpg should hang out w/ some jeepers....in stock form my 4.0L buddies get 14-16 mpg and the 2.5L 4 bangers are jumpin for joy when they get 21mpg......... and thats pussy footin it!

No matter how amy times you gotta fill up, gas will cost too much.  I'm hoping to find a 5 gallon fuel cell so I'll be a little lighter.  Maybe less weight will equal better milage....or at least better hill climbs!  Either way I can mount it high up and worry alot less about hittin my tank!

I would think the added weight on the tailgate would cause the hinges to fail. Would probably have to figure out a way to mount the can inside, or on a swing away door.

I'm making them at the moment here in NZ, holds 63Lts (16.6 Gallons) constructed from 4mm alloy with a 6mm bash plate under it.

Retailing them for NZ$ 520 which is US$335ish  ;D
