Whats up guys

I don't post that often but I neen some advice.

My tranny has been wineing for a while now and it is really hard to shift in and out of gear. I is a manual out of a 92 4 door

So I was planning on rebuilding it the only thing is that I have never done anything this indepth before. I have already dropped the tranny and transfer case out and it sitting in my garage.

I need to decide if I am going to take into a shop and have it rebuild profesionally or if I should start taking it apart.

I have another car for the time being so the transportaion issue isn't a problem for now.

Any advise would be great thanks

Did u try adding an additive to the oil? sometimes that helps. But I'd got to a junkyard, you can find em for cheap and sell this one as a spare.

with a book, a manual isn't that hard to rebuild ... (got/get a FSM?)

I'd say do it yourself! Might just be me, but I like delving into challenges.

Worst case, get a pull from a pic-a-part if you screwup.

You're kidding I hope :o even a manual tranny can be tough to do correctly, especially if you've never done it before.

LBC4x4, if you're certain the tranny is toast go buy one and save yourself some money and the hassle. Most junkyards give some kind of warranty, your inexperienced hands will have no warranty.

My point was give it a shot ... sure it aint *easy*, but there's always that first time for everything ...

I have a both the dealer shop manual and the on you buy at pep boys.

How much do you think that they will cost at a junk yard and what years will I be looking for since mine is a 92.

I was also wondering if anyone had any hints or advice that has already done this. Because even if I buy one at the junkyard I still have my old one that dosn't work and I would problbley rebuild it sometime.

I just checked http://www.car-part.com and there are several in the southwest for $250-$400. I would think $250 would be a fair price with a warranty. Don't you have a local pick-ur-part kind of place where you can get used parts cheap? They can typically be had for even less from people that are parting out old TracKicks.

Yea I haven't checked the junk yards out yet. Going to do that tomarow. If I could pick one up for about 250 that would be great.

A 5spd manual is very easy in the whole scheme of things. I bet noone would discourage him replacing a head. IMHO the trany is simple. Get a book take your time and have a clean workspace. Lay the parts out 1 by 1 on a clean sheet or a big box so they go back the same way they came out.

I am betting on main or cluster gear bearings. about 100 to 150 for the rebuild kit. Take it apart carefully first and see what you need you may find the case damaged and then it would be better to get a repacement.

I wasn't trying to discourage, I was being realistic. :P Rebuilding an engine or replacing a headgasket is easy, I've done it many times. Working with gears whether it be in a trans or setting backlash can be difficult for someone that's never done it before. If he wants experience I say go for it. If he wants longevity I say buy one used. It's just my opinion, some people get lucky their first time, most do not.

Ok I hear ya too but ( funny that word "But" can be good or bad, BUTT or BUT). a head can take $300 in tools and there is no back lash in a zuk trany and I have done many with nothing more than a $30 dollar gear puller from harbor freight. My point is that you must try to gain the experiance. It costs nothing to tear it down and they are not hard once you get in there just be careful to get the parts back the way they came out. FSM will help. If in the end it is too much they toss it anmd get a new or replacement. no harm done. I wish no fight here just a different angle. we can let the man make his own desicions. ;)

Seriously, I would give it a good inspection before doing anything. We once pulled a 3.0 Ford because it sounded like a main bearing. When we got it on the ground the problem was plain to see. The harmonic balancer bolts had loosened and were causing the knock. It could not be seen with the engine installed. Sometimes it's the simple things that get ya. ;)
