I think 1.3L or V-6. I believe that all of the Pre-Grand Vitara (USA) were all the same, but all I have owned have been 1.6L (99, 97, 89)

yeah i think its true all the casings are the same ,

I have seen a diffence in drive shaft length , I have measured a 22 spline 1990 drivers front axle against a 26 spline 2000 and there is a bit of difference,

Anyone know what 26 spline i can get that is the same length as the 1990 22spline mainly the part that goes into the casing

A 96 would do it.  I got mine from Hawk, when I went to 26 spline.

Mark,
Housings,
are all the same dimensions whether they be the 1.3 to the V6, alloy or steel they are identical other than a few extra bolt holes.

Axles,
from what I found after climbing over 20 or so G/Vs,Vits and Escudos is the easiest way to find that  26 short axle is to first look and see if the trucklet if fitted with Free wheeling hubs (they can be ether manual or autos). The short axle is only fitted to trucklets with FWH's ! I'd say if you find some thing post '95ish with FWH's it will have the right type of axle.

The one I found was from a late '90 diesel Vit so check them out too.

cheers shane , I got to the point where i was fitting my axle back in with the New ARB in it , I ordered a 2000 drivers cv and found it to be a little too long.

So it looks like i need a pre 96 will ask the breaker to compare it as he lives about 300 miles away and sends stuff to me ,

??? Normally the short axle  diff's runs with the long splined version R/H C/V and you'd only use a short type C/V with an air actuated diff (G/V style).

So your saying that a long splined R/H C/V won't work with you ARB either   ??? ??? ???

Is this the problem your talking about ?

I measured the ARB against the stock diff and the ARB is in the same place as the stock, Measure where the circlip sits and the 2000 drivers cv/axle sits about 1/4 of an inch out when the circlip is in position probably less.  Measure the 2000 agasint the 1990 and there is around 1/4 inch difference.

so reading above i thought maybe a slight defference in an earlier one compared to my 2000 one

Shane mate, yeah dont worry when you can,

My second plan is to make a rubber bush to sit in the gap that fits over the shaft as the stock seal isnt great and this would make a pretty good seal.
I have some pretty big round bushes that i can drill the center out to make them fit over and sit nicely in the cv cup.  What do you think.

I will take a couple of pics tonight to better explain.
