Kick rear axle breakages
« on: February 10, 2005, 08:16:03 AM »
Just interested to know some details from those that have broken rear axle shafts. Which side did you break? What size tires were you running? What type of locker if any? How hard were you pushing it?

Both, 33x12.50, Lockrite, HARD ;D

Actually after long periods of abuse they will gradually twist. And then can break under light abuse. But had been abused earlier.

3 lefts, 2 rights broken, and 2 sets left and right twisted with lockers and 32" and 33" tires. Various degrees of torque application. :)

Just been wondering about various elements that may contribute to the shaft breakages. I know there's not much difference in length but things like the shorter side failing more often, the type of locker used eg. loads coming on and off as a Lockrite locks and unlocks compared to ARB, a manual compared to an auto trans as a clutch is dumped, the size and grip of a tire and the type of surfaces you drive on and obviously how hard you drive your rig.

My hubby broke the short side (I think) on his Samurai, twisted it til it broke.  Detroit locker and only 235s.  But he's been on it HARD for a couple of years.  He goes with no lift, where some of the big guys can't go!  So I think its like Zukipilot said, just gradually abused it til it twisted to breaking.
