Preparing to Melt!
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:09:28 PM »
Only one more month til Zookimelt at The Badlands!!  Removed my tailgate and worked on making a set of half doors for the Kick this past weekend.  Between the doors and the tailgate I'm figuring I lost 60lbs!  And the visibility is awesome now.  I'm really happy with how they've turned out so far!

I think they are both nice. :D

I aint never none of them before!  Nice idea,  lets see you do that to the tailgate....

I also like that BIG TUBE bumber on the front.  That could hold air for a ARB or airing up the tires.  ;D
My driver front fender almost matches yours too!

   Thanks ya'll!

CWilkinson,
The seats are stock, with off the shelf seat covers from WalMart.  They looked like potato sacks when put on out of the box.  So I folded the headrest part over the back, and tacked it together to fit better.  Then cut holes and reinstalled the seat headrest.  They fit really well now!  I do need a cage, even more so with these doors.

Echojeff,
I did consider halfing the tailgate but only cause I ride my dogs in the back and needed something back there for them.  But since I'll be running with the spare laid down in the back now, it'll be easier just to take the Tracker!  I even considered cutting the rear fenders down too.
The front yellow bumper is hollow with a nerf ball in each end.  I carry a coil air hose in there for the tank in the back bumper, which I never use cause it has a leak in it!  Another thing to fix before the Melt!!  No worries about exploding from impact!!!
Safarikicks doors are awesome!  They look professional, mine look redneck in comparison!!  Even have some black ducktape on the inside at the moment!  I think I'm going to gut the interior of mine partially, to take advantage of the space for storage.

Where are your mirrors going to go?

The stock passenger side mirror is still there on the door but the drivers mirror was gone already.  I didn't cut any of that.  But since I've got to replace the drivers mirror, I'm going to see what kind of foldback mirrors I can find to mount in the stock location.

What did you use to do the cutting with? and did you just go down to your armrest? one more question how do you open them or is it dukes of hazard style?

LOL!!  I've been joking about the Dukes of Hazard style!!  The door latch mechanism is still there and for now I just have a wire running from it out where the window handle used to be on the inside.  It actually works pretty well, but not very pretty.  Not sure what I'm going to do there.  The whole things kinda experimental!!
We cut the doors with a plasma cutter.  We cut the outside along the first bump in the body below the window.  Cut the inside about four inches lower, even with the bump in the back fender.  Then folded the extra metal from the outside over and kinda spot welded it to the inside.  Makes it perfect for an arm rest!  The outside door handle fits back in the hole, only its on top of the door now.  I'm sure you could make it work still.  But I figure it will fill up with mud and dirt and be a pain to keep clean so I'll probably eventually cover the hole and add some padding.

Hey Quawdog,  aren't you too busy wheeling yours to get stale???   I'd much rather been riding at Daniel Boone with ya'll this past weekend!!

I have an extra drivers door.. hmmmmmmm, maybe I will go pick up an extra passenger and join the half door crowd. I just LOVE the look!!  The only trouble is, with my tires sticking out like they do, I get COVERED with mud with just the windows down, I could imagine what I would look like with half doors... lol

Red your lil rig is really starting to look TOUGH!!   Isn't your old man pissed that it outdoes his Sammy??? lol..

Thanks, Quadawg!   Yeah, the mud is going to be interesting.  I'm keeping an eye out for flares!

Heck, I was just getting to where I could keep up with D in his Sami and he went and added a front locker!!  He's the best driver, best at picking a line, I've ever seen.  (I might be slightly biased!).  He's also a little bit crazy and I don't always want to go where he does!!
