How to get the OEM spare tire lug nut lock off?
« on: June 10, 2006, 11:31:06 AM »
I haven't played with it too much other than to shoot a bunch of PB'laster in it last week but I noticed the little spare tire lock thingy is now rusted shut.  Damn, one Michigan winter...tells you things...

Anyways, how do I get this thing off?

Usually all you have to do is get the key(ignition key) inserted into the lock. It doesn't have to turn, just stick the key in and pull the lock off...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

if you can't get the key in it you better fill it with penetrating rust remover, WÜRT has some good products.

i inspected and filled my lock with a WÜRT product before the winter, wiped off and put it back.

I need to try it again but the wife's got it at work right now.  Last week when I first noticed the issue it was like the "door" that flops up against the opening wasn't folding back all the way.  I could get just the tip of the key in but it was being held up by the "door".

That's what I did to get the PB'laster in there.

I've messed with it again and it sure seems like the "door" is stuck.  I can just barely get the tip of the key in and there's a lot of resistance...boy, that sounds...inappropriate... ;D

Anyone know exactly how these work?  Wondering if there's any way to get them off short of grinding the top off. :P

LOL! I got kinda ticked and used a torch on the last one I couldn't get off.

Cover the spare with a large towel and beat the heck out of it with a BFH and a chisel
........ if you don't have a torch  ;)

Wouldn't that bend the spare stud?  I'd kinda like to not screw that thing up. :P

No torch, but plenty of grinding discs. ;D

Now I just have to get some quality time with the thing when the wife isn't off going places. :P

;) Yes, I sappose you need to break out the grinding discs since you really don't want to harm the stud. The first layeer will be the outer shell of the lock assembly and once you get through that, the second layer will just about fall apart revealing the 19mm head. Put a wrench on it and start turning then you'll get it.

Use a 1/2 inch drill down the center of the lock . It has small plates that are lined up with the key ,when you put in the key they move out of the lug nut threds and it pulls out . It is an extra long lug nut on the stud the lock does not hold the spare on the car.

Out comes the grinder. :P  Thanks guys.

Just drove over 500 miles in less than 2 days...got half way to Detroit yesterday...in the boonies in the middle of the state...and thought..."gee, it would suck to need the spare right now." ::) :P

I use a hammer and pounded the lock off.  A new stud was less than a dollar at the bolt store.
