Sure, just remove the inner panel and you can get a look at how it mounts. The bolts go into weld nuts, so if you want to add a plate of some sort you would have to remove them first. Probably tear up the door doing it though.

I have always thought that the weight concern was more for the hinges of the rear door, not the  carrier getting pulled off of the door.  Which is the reason I posted a pic of an aftermarket bumper with tire carrier... of course everyone went off on the roof rack instead  :P  I was not suggesting that you put the spare tire on the roof.

The problem I've seen, on 2 door soft top Track/Kicks at least, is that the outer door skin tears as mentioned before.  My '93 and '90 both have that...and neither ever had anything other than a 205/75R15 OEM spare on them. :P

In that case wouldn't a big(ger) washer inside the door at each of the bolts take care of the problem.  I wouldn't expect that you would need to add a metal plate.

I had a 30inch superswamper on a 10inch wide steel wheel on the back of my tracker for 2 years and i have had a 33 back there for 6 months now and ive never had any problems.--no extra bracing or anything

thanks guys for all the input.  it was the door skin i was most concerned about.  looking at all your pics and reading the comments, i think i will try to remove the rear bumper plastic and rig something that will mount to the bumper and support most of the tire/wheel weight. 

or, i could just get one of those real fancy roof racks and hook a bunch of bungee cords from it to the tire to take the weight off!!    ;D

how are you going to be able to use the rear bumper without hindering the door from opening unless you do some kind of swing down tire carrier thing?

well, not completely sure, but was thinking of something like a small roller like is used on small boat trailers.  depending on how i work the bumper, the roller would be fixed on it and when the door closes, the tire would ride up on the roller only about half an inch maybe.  just enough to give the tire some support.  that small amount shouldn't affect the door alignment much if any.  not sure til i get the plastic off the bumper to see what else might work.  open to all ideas at this point.       ???

what i was thinking was maybe like how some tire carriers(like the one on my old pathfinder) swing out, make one that was hinged to the bumper that swung down and only latched to the door.  that'd probably take alot of the stress off eh?  probably be a bit of work to make though.

Yes made it up my self. Just have to mod the exhaust sticks out in the wide blue yonder now.
