have had several jeeps and scouts in the past.  have a late 70's frame and drivetrain on jack stands in my garage now.  was going to be my 'retirement jeep',  built from the frame up the way i wanted it.  then the old suburban tranny went south a couple of months ago.  found a nice '91 tracker in my price range and got it for the gas mileage.   8)
now, plan on making the tracker my 'retirement trackick'!  love the 30+mpg, size and handling, and the plain "fun-to-drive" factor.  doing some mods now and more later.  building it up for winters in Nevada and summers in Minnesota.  that means i'll be keeping the heater!!  ;D
'91 tracker, 1.6 8v 5-spd, 1.5 in susp lift,  DT header and 2 in exhaust, 235/75 AT's on 15x7 Turbines, 1st prototype: Ibuiltbumpers.com trackick front bumper!,  other mods coming soon!

If you really want the "ultimate" wheeler & good gas mileage, consider going with a 1.6L Turbo Diesel.

I switched from Jeep to Suzuki when I saw
the price tag of the Wrangler back in 89' and
it was $5000 more than the Suzuki, I bought
the Suzuki   ;D  One of the best cars/trucks I
have ever owned, the other being my VW Scirocco
I still miss that car, what a blast to drive in the
mountains, but not off the road  ::)

I have had 3 CJ-5's, one flat fender, one CJ-7. two CJ-8's (scramblers) , a few wagoneers, and one TJ.   I have been running a samurai off road since 1990.  Much more comfortable, lighter, better fuel economy (can wheel all day on a tank of fuel), more capable vehicle, parts are way cheaper.  Wont ever own another Jeep until they come out with the scrambler again.

I had a YJ in high school.  My wife (then girlfriend) and I loved putting around out in the desert.  When I was graduating college and expecting a baby I talked my wife into a Tracker for our family vehicle.  Has 4drs, can fit 3 car seats in the back, is a real SUV and small/nimble enough to have lots of fun in.  Now she has a Trailblazer and the tracker is all mine ;)

I got my zuki first, and still keep it. The jeep sits right next to it in the driveway  ;D

I had a Jeep YJ.  Pretty standard, 2 1/2" OME springs, 31" tires, limited slip in the rear.  I was going to build it up, but the axels to run 35 and larger were so expensive I decided to buy a Suzuki and build it up instead.

When the motor went south I bought another daily driver and sold the Jeep after it sat for 6 months in the garage.

Sadly, I found an old Wagoneer with the D44 axels I was looking for two weeks after I bought the Suzuki and a tow rig...   :P

bah - nothing wrong with Jeeps, they're just more expensive.

I would think at initial cost only for a standard wheeler.  If your planning on running 38" tires anything short of a 1-Ton is an expensive build.  But for a vehicle that can go 95% of the trails, and winch over the rest, you really can't top a Zuki for price vs performance.

Unless you count 1/4 mile drag times.  ;D
