lift question?LOL
« on: July 06, 2006, 10:06:13 PM »
got a couple questions? i have a 4 door sidekick sport and want to lift it a few inches for more clearnece. it will not be used for any kind of real trails, just exploring and family cmaping. it is also the dd rig. i have a buddy with some 00 grand vitara springs i can grab. will these lift me at all? maybe those and some 1" or 2" spacers.

then i figgured i would use some calamini struts with the mounts flipped.i can grab the stock springs froma  buddy for $35 and the two front calamini struts for $20? wondering how the ride will be compared to the stock sport springs.
i will justr add camber bolts to fix the front as well.
thanks
Jay

my rec ...

spring spacers (1.5" rear and 1" front), strut mount flip, 29" tires ... enjoy

The spacers and tires will gain you 2" of lift to the frame rails. All the plastic on a sport may cause some rubbing if you don't trim some.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

double check the struts Jay if they are off Tim's GV they may not fit the sidekick. springs should give you a little lift. May make it a stiffer ride though.

Just understand that lifts in kicks work different. THERE IS ONLY ONE KIT ON THE MARKET THAT GIVES YOU MORE ARTRICULATION IN THE FRONT, and that's the OME. All other kits give you lift, but the actual flex is the same as stock. This is because all other kits use a stock strut, or their own strut that has stock lenght stroke.

In other words - if you don't NEED a lift - there's no reason to get one. If you're just going camping and on unmaintained roads, you can keep her stock. Or just get some spring spacers, and 29" tires.

Everything I've seen leads me to beleive that the Sidekick/Tracker used the same front struts as the 99+ Vitaras/Trackers/GV's/XL7's/etc.  I know OME has the same part number for all of them and I know someone who has used a set of OME struts on his GV that came off of a Sidekick.

Also, Calmini struts are stock length.

i would say to just go with 1.5" coil spacers, do the front mount flip, and put some longer shocks in the back. put on some 235/75/15 tires, or something like that, then it would be pretty good to drive on the street, and and give you a couple more inches of ground clearance. wont cost that much either. i dont think you need to do anything extreme, thats what the other zook is for.

PS -  i have a pair of rear shocks  that are pretty new that you could buy off me :) i got them a couple months ago from biker, but  they are a little stiff for my 2dr. probably would be good for  your sport. i just need to buy a softer replacement first.

thanks, think i will throw the GV springs in it, maybe flip the strut mount. if i still want a bit higher i will add some spacers later.

I would just buy a set of 1.5 inch spacers to put in the front and rear, will probably make it seem like it's sitting back a bit but if you don't like that you can get a bit bigger spacers in the back. digger's spacers might be a good choice. on a non-sport it's a bit over 2 inches of lift in the front and 2 in the back. flipped strut mounts or ome struts would be good as well as pro comp's 2 inch lift shocks for the back. your E brake lines and brake line in the back will likely hang up when the down travel is maxed like on my GV. I relocated the brake line mount and zip tied the E brake lines so it would have full travel and leave a little slack on them

best of luck

why would u you go with spacers over the GV springs? doesn't make much sense?
i would make my own spacers this time if i need to. not interested in having something like that shipped when i can get the material locally for really cheap and just shape it myself.

You know, if the ride wasn't too stiff I'd go with the GV springs myself.  I've just been through the spacers and stock springs vs limited space battle and you know what?  Stockish length springs are the way to go.
