This may be the end
« on: July 08, 2006, 11:33:32 AM »
Well, the sidekick is hurtin' pretty bad.  :(
It failed Aircare (emissions), it burns oil constantly, it billows smoke on start up and it seems this may be the end of our relationship.
It needs some work on the emmisions and possibly rings and a valve job.
I am suprised considering I baby it and keep up with the maintenance.
Its a 92 4dr jlx with a 2.5" body lift.
It would be an awesome project for someone.

I have been intstructed by my mechanic to run 20w50 oil in it to cut down on the oil consumption and smoking.
Is this true, and is it ok for the engine?

hi.
they used to call 20w50 'racing oil'.  it is thicker to handle the higher heat that racing cars put out due to the higher revs.  however, i don't thinnk it will get you through your emissions test with a passing grade.   why not keep it and swap in a newer motor or do a diesel conversion?
just my $.02.   good luck.

Are you in the Fraser Valley in BC by anychance?  Motors arent that hard to comeby and if its something simple like valve seals, I know a guy that will sell you a good head for a good price.  If you want to get rid of it.. how much?

20W-50 oil is really 20 weight oil, if you
want to help oil smoking, use 30 or 40
weight, but it really won't make a huge
difference.

Put in some THICK oil (40 or 50), and give it a try. It won't kill your engine if you JUST do it for the SMOG test. Swap back to proper oil immediately after, and you'll be okay. It's too cheap to NOT try it.

If that doesn't work, price out a used head, and price out what it would cost to have a machine shop do a valve job. Go with what's cheaper. This will probably get you to pass, as most the smoking engine problems are from the valves.

And, of course, you could swap motors from a wrecked Samurai or Trackick.

If all your other components and the block are in good shape why not rebuild.  At least you know everything is good.  With a swap you may find new issues popping up

Although a new engine might be cheaper and quicker

And remember a grand here and there is still way cheaper than a new car/truck

Well, I am sad to say that I have sold my suzuki.  :'(It has been an awesome vehicle and I have appreciated all the advice over the years.
It has gone to a good home and I can visit anytime I like.
It is going to be hard to go "cold-turkey" but I feel that I must move on and remember the good times.
I will pop-in once in a while to see whats new.

Thanks again
