While putting the front lift on the Grand Vitara yesterday my passenger side (US p-side) axleshaft actually pulled out of the diff a good amount.  I just wiggled the knuckle and cv-joint and bloop, it slid all the way back in, up against the diff and all.  Had some drama with other stuff but managed to put it all together and have it buttoned up about noon today.

However, while I was underneath it torquing the lower control arm bolts I noticed it's now a good 1/4" or so away from the diff.  I tried to just worm my hand up there and push it back but that didn't seem to work.

How big of a problem is this and how can I fix it?

I'm off to get it aligned so I'll snap a picture later if anyone needs it.

This do to the shift on the fly "stuff" in side the diff.  It's just normal paly mine has the same space

Cool, good to hear.  I was worried but then I just drove it about 25 miles round trip to get it aligned and well...it looks fine.  No sign of leakage or anything fishy.

Well, you screwed it up, it's junk now.  Take the whole front diff out and send it to me, and I will send you a nice lightweight aluminum go fast part for free!!


 

Uhm...NO.  I like my steel housing...even if I won't wheel this thing much at all...payments and such...

Jack it up and see if it pulls out. You may have displaced the snap ring thats supposed to hold it in. If it stays in place then its OK.

EVERYTHING looks like that up here in Snow and Salt country...

looks like you may have done what I did but not as bad. I ruined the seal and snap ring in there and had to take the whole thing apart including the axle housing because the snapring came apart in there. try taking off the hub and C clip and tapping it in with a dead blow, if that doesn't work you may have a serious problem. check for oil drips each time before you drive it

Welcome to the rust belt.

It's not leaking.  I think blacknight's correct and it's normal.

lucky then. you know, I think I really need manual hubs especially since my CV angles are steeper.
