widened and long travel
« on: July 11, 2006, 11:44:02 PM »
ok was at working thinking about other things and then an idea came into my head......

if you make a new control arm wich is say like 2-3 inches longer meaning wheels are about 2-3 inches farther out and then using a  longer spring  too get the travel . now take the cy shaft and add in the extra length to compensate

1- can we at home do this and

2- has anyone tried.

i just remember seeing similar stuff to off road racers  vehicles.

If you were to lengthen the control arm on the outside then you wouldn't need a longer spring, only a stiffer spring. The main problem is that the strut attaches to the hub, so you won't get any extra travel and your camber goes all wrong. You have to come up with another way of locating the hub and providing damper. I always thought the problem would be adding an upper control arm, Mike added a lower control arm to his setup and used the original arm as the top mounting, clever that.

yeah I ws thinking the same thing about the dual control arms and he really did hit it onthe nose simply (well lots of work actually) buy building a lower control arm system .... well done

but if you were to do a shock hoop and bring the upper mount out farther then that would take care of the camber. sort of like the desert buggies that have the big hoop in each corner and the coil over attached to a single control arm and then ...... you know shat i mean would be neat or really weird looking any hoo just was thinking.

if you bring the strut outwards, you will end up with less travel than factory.

if you are going to design and build a upper and lower control arm system, you pretty much need to do what stan did, and have a seperate shock to dampen things.

just extended the drive shafts and the control arms is not even close to being workable. there are a lot of things needed to be sorted out, steering, steering geometry, esp through the range of travel, and bump steer, and hyper-extended the CV joint, or smashing it through the cup when compressed.

do you just want clearance, or more travel through an IFS set up?

look at the toyota's, they use a torsion bar set up, maybe this can be adapted more easily, and may work to what you are needing.

If the you are in search for more travel don't do this , as the upper strut mount need to be moved outward you actually reduce the travel as SiKiD_01 says.

But yes some has done it...
