Noob, Carbureter HELP!!!
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:16:59 AM »
Hello. I am new to the forum so I am going to give a quick howdy from Arizona.

I do not own a Suzuki, so I am a little unfamilliar with some of the fuel management systems.
I am working on my friends newly aquired 1987 Suzuki Samurai.

It was running rough. Replaced the plugs wires cap and rotor first. Spark is strong. TIming is good and compression was good.

So, after looking at the vacuum lines I noticed some were missing and some were plugged. No thanks to the PO.
I went ahead and took off the carb and rebuilt it. Some of the jets were mared up looked like the last guy could not get them out. And beacues they were messed up neither could I. So I am not positive they are clean. But everything else, gaskets, o-rings, accelerato pump, were replaced. Everything is in the right place.
But I am unsure about a few things with the vacuum lines. The map on the sticker under the hood does not show at elast two of the parts on htere. Wich really makes me wonder about other things.

Is there anywhere I can get a good vacuum routing diagram???

The carba nd everything is back together, vacuum the best I gould figure. But I am unsure about that.

Go to start it, and after cranking the gas up to it, it fires. Idels at 150-200rpm!!! I did not think that was even possible. but it kept running right there. ???
But I cannot get it above 500rpms without a ton of pedel work. And once it gets over 2,000 it runs smooth and strong.

Could this be a vacuum issue, or do I have an idle jet plugged or something internal?

I know that is a tough question without being here.

But I don't want to take it all apart again if it is just vacuum. And I want to rule that out first.

Any help would be MUCHO apreciated.

Also, not so important, but is there an easy way to torque the two nuts on the drivers side of the carb? The ones that screw down on the studs to hold the carb on. Those were a pain to get to. Litteraly.  :D

Could be a vac issue, I recently took off my carb and had a hell of a time remembering where all the lines went.  I followed the diagram in a manual (same as under the hood) and guess what there wrong.   I had to look at my friends sammy to get it right.   then she ran good!

I figured as much. There are lines going to places not even mapped out.

I do not know anyone personally that owns one that I can look at.
What is option two for a good and correct diagram???

Thanks for the reply by the way. Helps me feel a little better. I am hoping it is jsut the vacuum lines messing things up.

Great article. But I can't see where everything hooks up on the vacuum. But if I have to take it apart again I will not take the whole thing out. So that helps there.

So is there no drawing or anything that correctly shows where everything is hooked up for the vacuum lines? Does it not exist??? If so why not?
Because the one under the hood is wrong. It does not even show all the components for crying out loud.

I think Ack has a vacuum line diagram on his faq. I'm sure he'll be along in a bit with a link. Also try

That is what the link said. Oh well. I will check back later.

Well I took it apart again and found out that the check ball under the Accelerator Pump was missing. Haha. So I got htat back in, and checked all the jets again. They are all nice and clean.
Got it back together. It runs nice and smooth and idles good now.

BUT...

It acts like the secondary is not opening, cause there is NO power above like 3,000 RPM's. It still runs smooth up there, but it has no power.
Could the diaphram be sticking? But my guess is that the vacuum is still wrong.
I found a guy that works at the auto shop that owns an '86. He will bring it in Monday, and hopefully I will get this set right.
Thanks for the help sp far. You guys rock.

Ive got a weber on mine, I don't recall how the hitachi was but on my weber, I took the top of the carb off (5 or 6 screws) and gained all the access I needed to the 4 bolts. I had a wrench that I bent and ground for clearance but it was still too hard to get them just right, and I ended up bunging up the heads of the nuts, and the threads at the top of the studs. That's why I took the top off the second time around. I could actually get a socket on a few of them If I remember right. Don't forget the lock-tight. Adam

Also, since you said it was an '87, do a search of Ack's FAQ (link is in my signature) for vent tube.

Read that stuff, then look down the throat of the carb and see if there is one installed in it.

$12-15 bucks at most of the aftermarket dealers on the Internet.
